HIST 151 Lecture 26 Outline of Last Lecture I Atlantic Charter II Cash and Carry Lend Lease III December 7th 1941 Outline of Current Lecture I Executive Order 9066 II Rations and Rosie III Big 3 and Wartime Conferences IV Dachau and Auschwitz V Give em hell Harry meets Manhattan Project and Hiroshima Current Lecture Executive Order 9066 FDR allowed his Secretary of War to declare military areas where any or all people could be excluded This included the Pacific coast where a large number of JapaneseAmericans were sent to internment camps across the country out of military necessity This was acceptable at the time because of the attack on Pearl Harbor and another incident on a Hawaiian island where a Japanese air attacker crashed and was aided by Japanese Americans when the Hawaiians figured out he was a part of the Pearl Harbor attack Rations and Rosie Once war was in full effect the US was under a rationing system in order to save resources for the war effort as well as those at home As well since the men were off at war the women were needed in factories to keep things moving for the war effort and general production for the country Rosie the Riveter was a mascot for the women in the movement She was depicted flexing with the words we can do it Big 3 and Wartime Conferences The Big 3 were FDR Churchill and Stalin These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute Wartime Conferences were held where these three allied powers would meet up and talk about the war and how to progress etc Churchill hated Stalin and didn t trust him FDR mediated between the two Stalin wanted to control every place he liberated when the war was over They made a plan to invade Nazi occupied Europe create the UN and have Stalin enter the war with Japan after Europe was taken care of Later they discussed allowing Stalin to control certain parts of Europe as well as allowing him to back out of the Japan deal as a compromise for Germany not having to pay reparations again because look where that got us last time They also decided how to punish war criminals Dachau and Auschwitz Concentration camps where the German government sent Jewish gay black disabled and other undesirable people Give em hell Harry meets Manhattan Project and Hiroshima Harry S Truman became president after FDR died of a stroke in 1948 When he was talking badly about Republicans a member of the audience shouted Give em hell Harry which became his slogan The Manhattan Project was the creation testing and decision of dropping the atomic bomb Hiroshima was one of the sites in Japan the US hit with an atomic bomb It forced Japan to surrender ending the war
