HIST 151 Lecture 8 Chapter 18 Business and Politics in the Gilded Age cont Outline of Last Lecture I Mark Twain Gilded C Age II Railroads Union Pacific Central Pacific Great Northern III Golden Spike IV Steel and Oil a Carnegie Steel b Rockefeller and Standard Oil and Tarbell V Laissez Faire Outline of Current Lecture I Grange Patrons of Husbandry II Wabash III Interstate Commerce Act and Commission IV Pendleton C S A 1883 V Sherman Anti Trust Act Current Lecture Grange Patrons of Husbandry Railroads forced farmers into the modern age which they did not like They banded together and called themselves Grangers They established Granges which were official meeting places The Patrons of Husbandry were the most well known Grangers They challenged the railroads and create a third party which is the Populist Party This is the precursor to unions Railroads had no regulation Because of this they were ruining farmers land able to jack up prices for transporting farm goods and came and went whenever they pleased leaving farmers guessing on when they would export their goods for a living Wabash A court case that started local then made it to the Supreme Court A farmer wanted the railroads to charge fair prices and have a schedule Local court levels ruled in favor of the farmer but the Supreme Court overruled the earlier decisions because they were all old white rich males on the side of big business These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute This upsets Congress because they believe transportation was bestowed upon the legislative branch only not the judicial Within one year Congress wrote a bill Interstate Commerce Act and Commission 1887 The act sets up the commission This is the first agency set up to regulate ANYTHING And at this time it s rails This bill effects the punishments for crimes committed in different states as well Pendleton Civil Service Act 1883 Due to the Grant administration leaving a bad taste in everybody s mouth this act made it so that if you work for any kind of government job even the mail you will be given that job based on skill and merit not who you know or who you paid There s also a test you have to pass Sherman Anti Trust Act 1890 Back in this era a trust was a monopoly or a business that controlled all aspects of a product This act made it illegal to be a monopoly and to restrain trade
