HIST 151 Lecture 27 Chapter 25 The US and the Second World War Outline of Last Lecture I Nye Committee findings II 1930s Neutrality Acts III Munich in 1938 Appeasement and Peace for our time IV Blitzkrieg Outline of Current Lecture I Atlantic Charter II Cash and Carry Lend Lease III December 7th 1941 Current Lecture Atlantic Charter After England becomes involved in WWII FDR and Churchill decide to meet up secretly on a ship They agree to work together They write up a document opposing tyranny which is like Wilson s 14 points revised It s not an actual law or anything but it s a start and a blueprint for post WWII Cash and Carry Lend Lease The last two neutrality acts Cash and Carry is mainly to help Britain It says that if a country is at war they can buy our war goods with cash as long as they carry them back to their country Lend Lease comes when Britain is struggling badly due to the Blitz FDR has a fireside chat talking about how if your neighbor s house is on fire you would help them regardless of if you liked them or not Why Because your house is next and they re human beings He gets the people s support and then sends England our war supplies for free December 7th 1941 Pearl Harbor is attacked by Japan due to us putting an embargo on them for fuel food medicine etc for invading China These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute The American people had NO idea this was going to happen and the Japanese were even surprised they didn t get shot at or anything really They even went on to attack the Philippines that same day because they were virtually unscathed FDR kind of expected an attack from Japan but didn t know when or how This is what got us to declare war on Japan HOWEVER We went to Europe first because we knew that as soon as we declared war on Japan by treaty Germany would declare war on us
