HIST 151 Lecture 9 Chapter 19 The City and its Workers 1870 to 1900 Outline of Last Lecture I Grange Patrons of Husbandry II Wabash III Interstate Commerce Act and Commission IV Pendleton C S A 1883 V Sherman Anti Trust Act Outline of Current Lecture I Old vs New Immigrants II Xenophobia III Birds of Passage and Living on the Wind IV Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 V Jim Crow Current Lecture Old vs New Immigrants At this period in time Americans were shocked at the different types of immigrants coming to the US Before the immigrants were mostly from places like England Germany or Norway These people came as families and were skilled protestant literate and used to democracy They were also very Anglo looking The new immigrants coming over in this period were Eastern European Jews Poles Russians Italians etc Some would come in families but many came by themselves with little to no skills They couldn t speak English were illiterate and came from different religious backgrounds This created Xenophobia Which is the intense irrational fear or dislike of people from other countries Birds of Passage and Living on the Wind New immigrants of this period were called or referred to as Birds of Passage because they intended to return to their home country as soon as they had earned enough These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute money to buy land there These people had families back home waiting for them However many couldn t return because they simply couldn t make enough money to Living on the Wind is what many new immigrants found themselves doing They would go wherever they could find work and opportunities Some even settled in western prairies Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 This act prohibited all immigration of Chinese labor workers Jim Crow Originally a stereotypical name for a character in a minstrel show a play where whites would paint their faces black and act stupid lazy savage and deviant to promote racism this term started to refer to laws in the south that prevented black people from many freedoms the 13th 14th and 15th amendments had given them
