HIST 151 Lecture 13 Chapter 20 Dissent Depression and War cont Outline of Last Lecture I William Tweed Bossism II Tammany Hall III The Shame of the Cities by Lincoln Steffens IV The Southern and Colored Farmer s Alliance V Populists VI William Jennings Bryan VII Bimetal System Free Silver vs Gold Standard Outline of Current Lecture I William Jennings Bryan s Cross of Gold II Homestead Lockout Pinkertons and Frick III Milltowns Pullman Palace Car Co and Pullman IL Current Lecture William Jennings Bryan s Cross of Gold For the 1896 election the Democrats hold their convention in Chicago and have Bryan speak for silver His speech had the famous line Thou shalt not crucify mankind on your cross of gold The Democrats want him to be their candidate and run for president He agrees to run as a Democrat not a Populist This signals the end of Populism as a political force William McKinley the Republican candidate wins by a landslide and the gold standard is born This was the smart decision but continued the suffering of the poor Homestead Lockout Pinkertons and Frick Captains of industry started building towns outside of major cities These towns had meager housing a church a general store and a factory They were meant to have everything you might need They were called Milltowns because the center of the town was a factory or mill The poor from the city would move to these towns thinking they would be better than their current situation however once they came to one they were absolutely trapped These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute The captains of industry controlled every aspect of your life and made sure you didn t have access to anything outside of the town People were given jobs at the town factory but were paid in company script which is like a gift card to the company store the only store in town The prices at the store were outrageous so you would go in debt buying necessities This made it impossible for people to leave Homestead was a Milltown by Pittsburg purchased by Carnegie The workers of the town wanted a union but Carnegie said no He then put Henry Clay Frick in charge of the town Frick is like a slave overseer He s poor and angry but a step above the workers He s an incredibly terrible man who turns Homestead into what people call the Frick Fort This meant barbed wire and fencing all around the town holes in walls of the factory at eye level for guns searchlights etc Frick also brought in Pinkertons who were strike breakers They d come to factories and make sure nobody stepped out of line If somebody did they could clobber them and then take their place on the assembly line These Pinkertons were paid five times more than the daily wages workers received Eventually things got out of hand and troops were sent in to assist the Pinkertons 40 workers were killed and the rest were fired and blacklisted so they could never work in the industry again Pullman This was another Milltown It was located near Chicago and the factory there made Pullman Palace Cars for railroads These were luxurious cars for only the very wealthy The workers there could never afford a ticket to ride in one of these cars even if they saved whatever they could over a lifetime The cars themselves became a nationwide symbol of everything that was wrong with the era Once again troops were sent in to protect the captains of industry from the protests
