Born with certain genital structures – does this determine your gender or are there other factors?c. For some people, their gender will never change. For others, they may not connect with their given genderII. Dr. Halgin received a call from a 23-year old woman (at the time)a. Her name was Maryb. She said she was going to start a sex reassignment to become a manc. She needed 1 year of psychological treatment before she would be allowed to get the surgeryi. This is done in order to make sure there aren’t any other underlying issues1. Depression2. Psychotic – she is aware of what she is doing3. Rational?d. Sex change is irreversible, super expensive, and dangerousIII. Dr. Halgin says he doesn’t have any experience in the field of gender identity disorderand suggests she find someone elsea. She says that she has heard from many people that he is a great psychologist so she offers to pay for him to hire a consultantb. This will make Dr. Halgin’s treatment ethical and so that he is well informed throughout itIV. Dr. Halgin asks himself if he wants to embark on this journeya. There is a lot of pressure if he says yes or no at the end of itb. Is it the right decision for Mary to do this ? If he says no will she hate him? If he says yes will she be happy with what she has done?V. He suggests having a pre-evaluation before making a decisiona. She came in and had a very masculine appearance/mannerismsb.
