disorder on the dissociative spectrum characterized by at least two distinct and relatively enduring identities or dissociated personality states that alternately control a person s behavior and is accompanied by memory impairment for important information not explained by ordinary forgetfulness Iatrogenic any consequence of medical treatment or advice to a patient False memory the psychological phenomenon in which a person recalls a memory that did not actually occur Malingering fabricating or exaggeratingthe symptoms of mental or physical disorders for a variety of secondary gain motives which may include financial compensation often tied to fraud avoiding school work or military service obtaining drugs getting lighter criminal sentences or simply to attract attention or sympathy Factitious Disorder is a condition in which a person acts as if they have an illness by deliberately producing feigning or exaggerating symptoms Textbook Terms from Chapter 9 Dissociative Amnesia is amemory disorder characterized by sudden retrogradeautobiographical memory loss said to occur for a period of time ranging from hours to years Conversion Disorder causes patients to suffer from neurological symptoms such as numbness blindness paralysis or fits without a definable organic cause It is thought that symptoms arise in response to stressful situations affecting a patient s mental health Illness Anxiety Disorder refers to excessive preoccupancy or worry about having a serious illness This debilitating condition is the result of an inaccurate perception of the condition of body had placed babysitting advertisements in the newspaper o He would ask them about the responsibilities and then begin to ask sexual questions o One woman called the police FBI They tracked the call back to his office and arrested him o She was concerned that he was doing this to other people and didn t want any children to be hurt o How did this happen He went into treatment at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore He said he had high levels of stress it was like it as another person doing the bad behaviors He had memories of him being a child his mother used to bring him into bed with her boyfriends and involve him in sexual activities The telephone calls were a regression into childhood when he was exploited by his own mother Dissociative disorder is very controversial in court because people will try to fake it and use it as defense o Ex Kenneth Bianci his cousin hill side stranglers o Tried to claim he was under another personality when he murdered raped those women Case study Fred o Living in the woods with animals o Hung out with the bears talked to the fox walked with the deer felt like he could fly with the birds o Reclusive didn t want to be near people o I am a nonhuman animal I am one of them o very wealthy had a nice home o public issue feeding the bears domesticates them and therefore he is endangering himself and others Video o Timothy Treadwell o Grizzly man o Went to Alaska every summer for many years o Would live with the bears and took hundreds of videos of them o Became so arrogant transgressed into the bears realm without permission o Was eventually killed by a bear along with his girlfriend Fred s son called Dr Halgin asking for him to see his father o His life is in danger more than spending time with animals o He tries to tell him other wise but he responds with get out of my life leave me alone o What do I care if you have this delusion Is he psychotic Schizophrenic Delusional Hallucinating Psychosis o Challenges Getting him to come into Amherst He s going to think that you think he is crazy He also hates people He agrees to come in escorted by his son o Initial encounter Very hostile I m a nonhuman animal and I don t like people Same path as Andrew Dr Halgin shows that he accepts Fred I don t want a son family or relatives I m happy not liking people is this disturbed Not necessarily pathological there are many people who don t like other people o they start talking about hibernation he says he spends 50 000 year on food for animals bears like apple pie foxes like raw chicken o do you mind if I meet them Absolutely o Fred takes him home he lives in a very wooded area o There are bear droppings everywhere the deer come up to them same with the foxes o He has a studio that is extremely clean there are sanitary pads on the ground to clean up any droppings What is there to treat o Need to stop him from feeding the bears It is against the law Fred says You re not bad I ll come in every week Every animal has a name talks about personalities of animals If people intrude how do you tolerate me o You don t smell like a human He is paying out of pocket for Dr Halgin s services Who are you o Why dissociate at epitome of professional career o Survival tactic for trauma o Sexually abused by mother o Goes into altered state and becomes someone else hiding
