VocabularyCurrent LectureDon- Came in injured, bruised, scarred, and bloody- “I want to speak to somebody before I die”o Is he suicidal?o Is he being stalked/in danger?o Does he have a fatal illness?o Is he delusional?- As soon as he walked into Halgin’s office:o “It feels so warm and welcoming here” (Warm as in friendly, not temp.)o “I think I’m going to be killed soon. – I have these behaviors that put me in danger. I try to meettruck drivers on the side of the road for sex, but then I usually say to them (after the sex) thatthey’re faggots, etc. to provoke them into beating me up. I go to the doctor and they alwayswarn me to stop, but I don’t.”- Paraphilic disorders:o Paraphilic (“deviant love”) – intense and persistent sexual interest other than genital stimulationor fondling with mature, consulting partnerso Paraphilic disorders – distress, impairment, or harm (lasting at least 6 months)o Anomylous activity preferences: Sexual masochism – a paraphilic disorder marked by an attraction to achieving sexualgratification by having painful stimulation applied to one’s own body Sexual sadism disorders – a paraphilic disorder in which sexual gratification is derivedfrom activities that harm, or from urges to harm, another person- Halgin asks “Why are you doing this, Don?”o “I want to be hurt”o His step-father forced him into sexual assault that was very painful and brutalo So why does he stay at home? Has be been conditioned? Is he convinced it’s his fault? Is he doing something wrong and deserves to be punished? Stockholm syndrome – refers to a group of psychological symptoms that occur in somepeople in captive or hostage situations (where they form an emotional bond to theperson holding them hostage) Distorted mindsetThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. I want to tell you where I’m going”o Don read Halgin a letter he wrote responding to an ad in the newspapero He had agreed to be two men’s sex slave basically, saying they could do whatever they wanted tohim and that he would do anything they wanted to please themo What should Halgin do about this if Don didn’t WANT to change? Told Don to come back for another session – free of charge Don never came back Halgin assumes the worst…  Maybe Don just wanted to be heard so that he know someone knew he had at leastexisted on this earth/in this time?- What goes wrong to make people pedophiles?
