Correctional Subculture 1 Correctional Subculture Your name ADJ 235 Due date Instructors name Correctional Subculture 2 The correctional subculture is a pact of sorts that protects correctional officers from harm The rules of this subculture are unwritten and may vary between institutions but their primary goal is to keep correctional officers safe Some of the unwritten rules of this subculture include always siding with a fellow officer in a dispute with an inmate do not sympathize with the criminals you are guarding do not be a snitch and always assist another officer when needed These are similar to the unwritten rules of other members of public safety employees firefighters and law enforcement officers also have a strong bond or brotherhood due to these rules One would believe that a subculture meant to protect the safety of the correctional officers would always be positive this is not the case There are times when this type of subculture can lead to unethical behavior by one or more officers For example one of the unwritten rules is that one officer does not snitch on another This leads to an individual having to place his or her ethics in question What if the behavior of the officer harmed an inmate or was immoral The officer who learned of or witnessed this behavior is to keep quite This officer knows that if he or she does go to a higher up his or her life may be at stake These officers work with hardened criminals and at any time tempers can flare and a riot can ensue If an officer has not adhered to the subculture then other officers may be willing to protect that officer Correctional officers who do not uphold the basic rules can be humiliated by other officers their lives risked and future employment or promotions may be denied These types of subcultures while meant to protect can also be harmful If all officers have good work ethics then these types of problems will not arise Since unethical individuals do exist it is of utmost importance to have a strong leader who supervises his or her employees Correctional Subculture 3 Reference Abuse of Power 2008 Law enforcement Code of Ethics Culture Retrieved September 16 2010 from http www abuseofpower info Culture EthicsCode htm
