When deciding on the morality of an issue two individuals can have very different opinions; which one is correct? Each individual would believe that his or her moral belief if the correct one and that causes disagreement among those creating and enforcing laws, and how the law is written. The greatest pro o legal moralism is that it keeps, or attempts to keep, a high moral standard within any given community. Having laws that provide definite “dos” and don’ts” for citizens gives each individual a clear picture of what is expected, another “pro” to legal moralism. I do agree with most parts of legal moralism. I believe that I have high moral standards and I appreciate that wherever I live I am going to be surrounded, for the most part, with individuals who have the same moral standards. I do not agree with every single aspect of legal moralism, I believe certain private issues should be kept just that way. For example, it does not matter (personally) if two consenting individuals wish to engage in sodomy. This is a private act and I believe that it is a choice that should remain between two individuals. What harm is being done to the community if two people chose to engage in sodomy? If the act is committed in one’s own home out of view of others who may not agree with what is being done, it should be left at that. When the law steps in and says certain sexual acts are “wrong” and others are right, who makes those decisions? – Social deviance. Are there laws preventing more than two individuals from engaging in sexual acts? Not that I am aware of, and in my opinion, that type of behavior is just as immoral as sodomy. For the most part, legal moralism is positive, but someLegal Moralism 3issues with it need to be addressed to conform to modern society – technological age; that is flawless, and a way to keep high moral societal
