Undercover 1 Undercover Operations Your name ADJ 235 Due date Instructors name Undercover 2 Undercover police work is subject to much scrutiny Officers who do undercover work face ethical decisions on a daily basis and to those outside of the legal community an officer s actions may not always be seen as ethical In the text this week one o the arguments for undercover police work is to convict the guilty This ethical framework most closely matches my personal opinion I believe that the teleological system is the best way to judge law enforcement s ethics Those who follow the beliefs of the teleological system believe that the consequences of one s actions must be taken into consideration while judging ethics Specifically the utilitarianism method believes that the ends justify the means When a crime is being committed is it not fair to use whatever it takes to apprehend the criminal s committing the crime In movies and television programs undercover law enforcement officers are often portrayed as crooked dirty and law breaking individuals Oftentimes this is not the case Undercover officers have to put themselves in harm s way more often than a patrol officer There is a chance that an officer s cover will be blown and he or she will be subject to personal harm by the individual s that he or she is trying to apprehend This risk to one s life should give the officer permission to use whatever means possible to apprehend the criminal Criminals are crooked by nature and will use all means available to avoid being captured It is my belief that law enforcement should be able to use all means available to apprehend these same criminals Reference Undercover 3 Thomson Wadsworth 2005 Ethics in Crime and Justice Retrieved August 19 2010 from University website ADJ 235 Ethics and Law Enforcement Practices Chapter 8
