Spanish California The Spanish use California as a buffer state from the English and Russia from getting into New Mexico It isn t settled until the 1760 1770 and there isn t a lot of Spanish settlers in any of the state that Spain sets up They use the Native Americans to be settlers in these new states the Indians relied on the Spanish for all their goods and they couldn t get any of the goods unless they moved onto Spanish land The Spanish had different military outpost along the California s coast line they relied on the Indians to grow crops and farm for them and the supply of cattle herds that moved cows into California to sell During this time there were no fencing laws and so this forced many Native Americans to move to missions because the cattle would eat their crops and that s the only way they could survive California never had over 3 000 Spanish settlers California came a dumping town for all the scum in Spain and New Mexico The melting pots of the American West were Texas New Mexico and California because of all immigrants coming into there and all the Native American population California and Texas are so far away from New Mexico they start to set up their own rules and government
