The American West The Indians and the Spaniards America the camel produced agriculture The native Americans reached the Americas way before any other explore from Europe They crossed over the land bridge from Russia and they spread out throughout North When everyone comes over they all speak the same language and are one large group They live along the outside of Alaska and hunt the ground to extinction and when the weather warmed up they started to spread out From there they broke up into small groups to search for food and living spaces When they start to spread out they start to hunt animals to extinction like the horse and These smaller groups roam around looking for food at all time the game was used for everything from tools clothes weapons shelter medicine and a lot of other things Agriculture changes everything for these roaming nomadic groups For the first time they could stay in one spot and grow crops that would supply all the people and they would still need to hunt but not as much Agriculture starts in the valley in Mexico in 2000 BC Corn was the major crop grown from the start with supplements of other crops were later Word of agriculture does not really reach North America until 200 AD and the first tribe that did it was The Anasazi The Anasazi were the old people that lived on the land before settlers came to show them The Anasazi were the first group to use irrigation and cannel works for their agriculture they are also the first to use roads for trades They produce so much food that they had to build into the sides of mountains to protect themselves from raiders that wanted their food The villages had 16 to 17 thousand people that lived in it A drought hits the region where the Anasazi live and they cannot grow crops for several years so they move to the Rio Grande and set smaller villages This is where we see the change from Anasazi to Pueblo and they set up villages and boundaries for protection they also meet the Spanish later on in life The Anasazi is the best example of agriculture of the Indian tribes To grow all these crops it took all the people in the tribe to do it By having all the people work together on the crops it allowed them to closely bond with each other and this was the formation of different clans in the tribe The Plain Indians do not learn how to use the horse until the 1700 s and many tribes The Great Plain tribes lived on the rivers around the Great Plains like the Red River the didn t even use them at the time Black River and the Nebraska River The Indian tribes learned the migration pattern of the Buffalo and would only go out and take what they could carry back with them The Plain Indians lived on crops more than meat this was because they had large amounts of crops they could produce because of the rivers Because these Indians only go out a few times to hunt Buffalo means they could rely on their crops more than the Buffalo and could survive because of this When the Indians obtained the horse this all changed before this the horse had been hunted to extinction used the horse Until 1760 it was the first time the Indians could obtain horses and then 1780 all tribes The Sioux Indians were the best users of the horse and they used them to hunt and travel They were first pushed out of their home lands and forced to move away and when they obtained the horse they learn they have to be war like if they do not want to pushed around The horse changes everything for these tribes it would mean the tribes could now travel long stretches of land in short period of time It also meant for the first time the Indians could hunt the Buffalo herds on the horse We also see with the obtainment of horse the abandonment of the small villages on the rivers and farming to travel with the herds so they could hunt There were 250 thousand Indians that lived on the Great Plains and everyone started to follow the Buffalo Buffalo to survive We also see war like actions start because the Indians tribes now depended on the We also see hierarchy start with ownership of horses this was because the horse was so important to the people in the tribes We also see the first time the warrior class start to change in the fact that everyone was for themselves and we all for the obtainment of horses Counting Coo touching you enemy in battle without killing them Because the use of horses we see the change from farming to back to hunting and gathering but when the railroads come out west and the hides we in demands the food supplies lowered and this cause the loss of the way the Indians lived The one tribe that used the horse just for war was the Comanche they controlled everything from Oklahoma to Texas and they first Native Americans to obtain firearms The used to live in Utah and were hunter and gatherers they obtained the horses from the Spanish The French gave the Comanche firearms to push back the Spanish and mess with them They moved at night when there was a full moon in which they would raid unsuspecting All they needed was water grass and a full moon and the Comanche would attack They used their raid to get more horses and took whatever they needed to survive The Comanche would take the smaller children from the families they killed and raise The Comanche were master of torcher and would inflict this on all the adults they would people them as their own raid in the village The only thing that lets settlers somewhat fight back was the Colt Revolver
