Early Spanish Exploration and Settlement Spain s New World Empire o Mexico and Puree were the foot holds that the Spanish had o These places had lot of silver and mineral deposits and allow the Spanish to o The expansion outward looking for Silver and Gold lead to other explores to acquire vast amount of it search America o One expedition was they landed in Tampa and trek all the way to Tallahassee and they make boats there to sail to Mexico o But at this time it was Hurricane season and so the boats get destroyed and some of the crew survive and wash up in Texas o Cabeza De Vaca was one of the men that survived and he was the leader and they lived with the Indians for years until the escape to Mexico o Here in Mexico Cabeza writes about 7 cities of gold that the Indians had told them about and this goes along with stories about the Spanish had about the 7 cities of gold o After this there was a rush to find the cities and the first group comes back and they didn t find anything but a priest of the groups says he saw something o The King of Spain hears the story and the priest s tale he set up another expedition lead by Coronado Coronado s Expedition 1541 1543 had over 200 Calvary 60 foot soldiers and all the regular soldiers plus the Indians and others o The priest leads them to the first city and it is just a city made of clay so Coronado send him home o On this expedition the Spanish met the Pablo Indian group and they wanted to convert them all to help them but if they did not surrender they would kill them o The Indians had no clue what they were saying and so they shot arrows at them and then the Spanish attacked o The cycle of trying to convert the Pablo and then being attacked happen at most of the towns so Coronado had to fight his way up through America o Coronado comes along a Andonquin in one of the villages and they named him the Turk he learns Spanish and talks with Coronado and says he can lead him to the city of gold o The Turk talks with him and they say yes and lead him back to Kansas where the Turks group is and he tells Coronado that he doesn t know where the gold was and just used them to get home Coronado kills him and leaves him there and travels back to Mexico o Coronado makes it to Mexico and talks with the Viceroy and he said that he wants to protect the Native Americans and Coronado s men say they kill anyone that they saw in the villages and Coronado is brought up trial for breaking the law and dies before he could be killed by the trials o Many of the towns we have today have been founded on the Silver and Gold supplies that were held by these places In 1573 the Spanish King releases the Royal Orders of 1573 and it said no more expansion in America because it cost too much money to do this o At this time Spain is at war with the French and the English over territory and religious standings o At this time the King had to pay for everything to make the army work from the ships to supplies to pay for the soldiers and so on o So the Spanish in America push the church to try and convert the Indians so they can get more land and supplies for the Spanish o The Franciscans are the group set up by the church to set out and take land from the Indians they are also named the lesser priest o They could send the Franciscans any time they needed to get land or set up new churches and no matter what they would get it done o The Franciscans dress and lived like the poor so that they would get better understandings and be able to help the people o The Franciscans were always working with the explores Columbus had some the Spanish had a lot of them and any explore that need them could always find volunteers to do it New Mexico 1598 o The King of Spain pay for everything the Franciscans could needed and at the time it was ok until they went to Mexico o The King writes to the Pope and says he needs help because even though they are taking in a lot of gold and silver but they are spending so much they are losing money o The Pope says he can t help them at this time and so the King thinks that New Mexico must have silver and gold in it that could pay for the priest o So the King breaks his own orders and send people there to get gold and silver and the king will send everything the priest need for the church but the silver and gold would support their pay o The Spanish missions were built in Texas and California and they were set up where the Indians would build the place just because the Spanish told them to and said if you want this religion them build the church o
