Yuxuan Hou Professor Lepselter SU22 WHAT IS AMERICA 14532 8 July 2022 GDQ 1 1 I think they will take this as a declaration of war and destruction of their country by the British Because as far as King Philip s self designation and diplomatic behavior this Indian tribe already had a basic national perception and self positioning as a national citizen they set titles appointed advisors and sent diplomats to correct their designations 2 I think the captor of this lady did not treat her as a captive but rather treated the lady as his trophy and slave following the example of what the British did He did not see himself as capturing the lady but as seizing the lady 3 She did not simply see the Indians as savages but as highly intelligent cruel evil and incomprehensible enemies In the first paragraph she describes the Indians as black creatures and describes their celebration as hellish This shows her hostility and hatred 4 What surprised me was that someone who once loved children so much when faced with a child in trouble chose not to help the child but to take food from the child This shows that the tough life since her capture has partially changed her 5 From the description of this passage it is clear that Mary is in awe of the woman leader admiring and fearful She describes the lady as a serious gentleman This shows her respect and recognition of this lady I think Weetamoo would have thought Mary was more pathetic and would not have given her the respect that she deserved more than a slave 6 This film shows the cultural and historical discontinuity brought about by the loss of language As tribes are torn apart and elders die the language is spoken by fewer and fewer people Modern people do not know what kind of history technology and culture these ancestors had It is a sad thing that they are forced to teach another language and gradually forget their lineage These descendants were imprisoned in the cultural cage of the colonizers and it was only in recent times that they became aware and set about restoring their cultural heritage
