related 10 2 Social change and Social Movement French Revolution started the whole idea of sociology Major Questions How do they happen why Why don t they happen Marx class conflicts starts revolutions exist all the time o Moment of awakening o Class consciousness vs class conflict o Not a sufficient explanation Collective Behavior theory o Leaders of a group can get everyone on board small crowds o How people take on the role of a leader o How do people assume their roles under the leader o How will the behavior behave collectively o People will tend to make the most reasonable choice at the most reasonable Rational choice time o People are driven by achieving what they want o Doesn t address culture that much o Power and wealth o Doesn t address honor or personal interest Resource Mobilization o Moving resources around o How we use resources o Accumulating resources o Not material goods culture political power o Using what you have in the most efficient way Culture o Framing how you present stuff setting yourself on fire in front of the govt which toppled the govt taking an event group of people and present them in a certain way to get a certain reaction o Identity understanding who we are has a lot to do with what we care about and whose the them were fighting against and forming your own identity proves to other people you know what you want peoples identities can change cause people realize they like other peoples ideals o Discourse how you talk about things how you present yourself in your bodily attitude symbols How communication works to accomplish a political end o Imagined communities aware that there are people in other parts of the country that are like you however you know they exist and they have something in common with you very important on the formation of a nation or a social group based on ethnicity 9 11 going to the red cross giving blood coming together as American Citizens o Why do some groups make better use of culture Some groups make use of powerful emotions to show we are here and there is a tremendous amount of inequality o Opportunity when people have the chance to change and express their views they will jump on the bandwagon and make it obvious to everyone else what there trying to do o Reframing changing the way we look at something reframing fish and calling them sea kittens so there cute Political process models o Structure who has powers state institutions and how they change o Threat opportunity somebody who has power might loose it because of a threat however for another person it s an opportunity One person s threat is another person s opportunity Group organized around race and they ll be taxed more so they ll be poorer which causes people to mobilize o Facilitation repression people that are helping the social movement to move forward and help achieve the ultimate goal they want to accomplish People in power repress a movement through violence adding more police might be threatening but its not violent Threats Positive or Negative o Positive threats give people a reason to go out and motivate someone to care about something when people are threatened they don t like that and will often do something to change o Negative threats can scare people away from social movements make cost so high so people wont want to do them anymore Cycles of Contention o Not always because one group is successful vs another o With the success of one social movement it will prove that another social movement can thrive One social movement is successful and it will show there is actually a chance and they will see it s possible and what s reasonable and people will become part of a social movement o Contagion where people start protesting and gives people the idea that the moment is now Social movement forms Synthesis Opportunities constraints structural and dynamic o Political structure is the base opportunities aren t the structure they might widen or take a new form they can change slowly of really fast Repertoires of contention barricades o Set way things are done within your ability part of what you do o List of stuff a movement can do o Culture is a tool box o Symbols different forms of discourse framing o Organizing themselves physically and politically o Same from movement to movement but sometimes a new thing will happen that will cause a new repertoire o Barricades weren t used until the French Revolution and they were started them to defend parts of a city work really well and people saw they were effective and they started to use them Framing and consensus o Forming things in certain ways o Can frame things in certain ways and you can choose not to buy it o Consensus building helps mobilize people to different groups by story telling to tell an emotional story to be able to attract more people Outcomes o Some fade away and some are successful 10 4 Gender and Mobilization Women who have talents don t use them to there full potential Women are sold and are given dance careers and sold into slavery exploitation Women are promised one thing and do another The control these people have over these women its almost impossible for these women to get out Women start out in Eastern Europe they move to Western Europe and once they have crossed there passports are taken away and restricts them from going anywhere As a social movement the women are using the dancing to attract people and framing dancing and reframing it to mean something else we might not be here voluntarily Mobilizing sex workers in support of them and tell sex workers there not alone and help them get organized as there own group Cant make sex workers illegal Globalization and Women Globalization ideas become global and are shared around cultures communications how countries are interdependent on each other the forces of countries are tied together the way elements of certain countries spread all over the
