Lecture 7 I am good at multitasking Being able to do two things that require your attention You can switch your attention pretty fast Automatic v Controlled Processes Cognitive resources o Cognitive load when we intentionally try and overload o Make one of the resources automatic o Start off with many resources and then make some o Controlled and automatic processes can go back and the resources automatic forth Ex if you get a different car then can become a controlled process again When things require more of your attention that s when things become more controlled o Overload resources o Never had to make the distinction on a penny location of where in god we trust o We use our resources for what we care about Cocktail party phenomenon Example of the penny A bunch of conversationst that are going on you pay attention to the one that you are talking to but then someone says your name and suddenly you change you re focus Were able to ehar the conversation before but because your name is really important to you you switch your focus attention and allocate your resources in that direction How do you make decisions 2 basics ways that we can make 1 algeristhim taking all the info and making the best decision decisions with that info you take every possible location that you can eat at and you list all the pros and cons and then determine where to eat 2 Heuristics shortcuts in decision making Availability Representatives Anchoring and adjustment o Use less resources and come up with incorrect judgment Availability of heuristics You hear the most about it most available to you comes most to mind why people are more scared of flying compared to driving Representatives of heuristics When you think of California you think of the beach easy going tan There is a stereotype that we think about California Making a judgment based on a stereotype information that is representative of a group in contrast to base rate information actual statistical likely hood of something Anchoring and Adjustment Anchor the previous information is a mental anchor o Ex when you ask me how many countries you then have to adjust youre answer becomes chained to the answer but you don t adjust far enough from the anchor ex when disputing salary you say a high number before talking about salary Intelligence G vesus multiple intelligence o General intelligence all comes from the same general construct intelligence correlates with one another evidence points towards G o Multiple intelligence one person can be very intelligent about one construct a distinctly different construct
