MUS M 402 1st Edition Lecture 25 Outline of Last Lecture I The Influence of Modernity in Music Outline of Current Lecture I II Expressionism Arnold Schoenberg s Work with Expressionism Current Lecture I II Expressionism a Expressionism inner reality vs outer world played out in music i Inner reality refers to the moment to moment emotions experienced by a human being 1 They are expressed in such a way that pulls the audience towards inner subtitles in the music that break us away from the outer realistic world ii MUCH more personal 1 Breaking realism to give the audience a deeper emotional truth iii Causes individual audience members to consider their own inner vs outer behavior 1 Peoples behavior usually reflects societal norms 2 The inner self however is often kept completely separate from reality private and remains largely unknown iv Expressionist composers attempted to bend realism Arnold Schoenberg s Work with Expressionism a Arnold Schoenberg 1874 1951 was an Austrian composer and painter who later moved to the United States in 1934 i Focused on creating new horizons in music ii Fascinated with impressive technique b Schoenberg s early music sounded similar to Wagner s compositions c Later on however Schoenberg began the movement away from all sense of tonality and directionality in music i He believed this was the next necessary step in music ii This was both a technical AND a new expressionist move a move towards a new form of expressionism
