Following the Baroque, music of the Pre-Classical Period emerges with a distinct new aesthetic ideal.i. Corresponding with the Enlightenment period in Europe and the rise of the middle class, a new aesthetic ideal of naturalness emerges. 1. Composers chose to create music based on a more simple aesthetic appeal reflecting what is natural in sound. a. This sharply contrasts the previous complexity with which music was composed in the Baroque Period. 2. The Bourgeoisie- the “merchant class” that emerges in Europe in the mid-18th century as European class structure and they way people think began to change. a. Composers like Sammartini begin to write in the new gallant style- simplicity, with big cadential markings that clearly defined the distinction between different sections. II. Review of Baroque Binary Forma. II: I - V :II: V - FOP - I :IIi. FOP (far out point)- Typical Bach method of composing ideas based on the term “fortspinnung”, which translates to the “spinning out of ideas” inGerman. 1. This was done with repetition of main themes, or the transposing and sequencing of ideas. III. Emerging Classical Binary Forma. This was the transitional form between the Baroque and what later becomes Sonata form. b. II: I - V :II: in V - FOP - on V ; I :II(in Dom.) (in Tonic)i. Notice that the second half begins to split into 2 sections. These 2 sections later will become known as the Development and Recapitulation sections of Sonata
