Beethovenian- the way that Beethoven takes existing, widely-understood aspects of form and style and monumentalizes them. i. Beethoven takes primary theme material and moves it into new key areas. 1. These shifts to different major and minor keys are very unexpected, and therefore uncomfortable to the listener. 2. While it may be uncomfortable for the listener to experience unfamiliar and somewhat unpredictable patterns in music, Beethoven is able to use this technique to simultaneously surpriseand convict the audience to listen and consider greater thoughts. ii. Beethoven is the king of extended final cadences. II. Symphony No. 9 in D minora. Musicologists call Symphony No. 9 in D minor one of Beethoven’s greatest and most comprehensive works because it addresses and communicates a “greater meaning” to the audience. i. Compels the audience to ask the following questions about mankind:1. What is it that people are really after?2. What do people really want?3. What is the purpose of life?4.
