ART HIST 110 1st Edition Lecture 18What we are discussing: Art after 1945 or Post War (WWII) art and architecture.1. Seagram Building - Architect: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - Best example of the post war international style of building- It is a corporate office building; no longer a private house- It is grand and monumental- It has a flat roof and uses basic rectilinear forms- Windows are arranged horizontally- It is not private, it is the beginning of the traditional office building- Has extensive space- It is an example of European architecture, just grander - This building is intended to express power and success, to be showy - This corporation makes liquor and is meant to be luxurious and shown of- Open plaza for the public, in order to show of their beautiful building; to view it- Only low rise buildings around it to really show its presence- It is a large building in a city of great density- Located in New York, NY, and was made in 1954-58- At night it is magnificently lit up “like a lantern that glows in a dark masonry city”- There is a way of order, stability, and serenity to the building- Warm colors lighten it- There are beams: I-Beam: it is a steel beam that is shaped like an “I”. They are used as the support and skeleton of buildings- I-Beams are used in the front of the building for not only decoration but also support and functionality that represent organization.- This building is of the international traditional style but it is the beginning of a transition away from this style- The I-Beams are dipped in bronze – “dipped like fondue”- The international style is the flat roof and glass, flat windows. 2. Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum - Architect: Lloyd Wright - In New York- Made in 1943-59- Many curvilinear shapes and forms make up this building- It is the same time as the Seagram building but dramatically diferent- It confounds your expectations- This building is broader at the top and gets narrow at the bottom as it ascends to the street. It is the reverse order of conventional architecture- It is a giant spiral that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom and consists of many ramps. - This is an example of modern art- Resembles the Kandinsky piece below- Light dome at the top floods the museum with natural light. It is the principle part of the museum. - People ascend the gentle slope of the ramp. Exaggerated gentleness. - Unconventional and diferent. An unconventional space to exhibitart and shows it. - Building outshines the art3. Circles- Kandinsky- C. 4. TWA Terminal; John F. Kennedy International Airport- This is supposed to excite you - It looks like a bird- This building is made out of concrete because it is really malleable and can be bent into many forms- Architect: Eero Saarinen - In New York and made in 1956-62- Inside of the building was colorful and elegant- Incredible curving form: a departure from the international style- A lot of lighting used as decoration- The international is too conformist and is always the same- Modern spacial; fantastically spacial5. Vanna Venturi House- Seeks to engage with the ordinary and the every day- But this comes away from conforming- This building is very innovative technically and exciting and evoke emotions- Architect: Robert Venturi- Located in Chestnut Hill, Penn., and made in 1961-1964- Departing from most modern architecture (most modern buildings have flat roofs)- Gable: pitched roof or pediment - The gable is the dominant geometric form of the building and brings back something more traditional. - A very one dimensional and flat, gets rid of its space- The architect says buildings can mean many things and not only express one idea. They can represent diferent emotions. He is currently mixing the traditional and modern. - Has traditional windows and horizontal windows like on an international style building- The architect wants to mix diferent styles into one building - He favors many and both (^) styles- There is an arch, but it is not a real arch, it is actually a design of an arch- This building alludes to consumerism - This building is complex and
