In the United States, architects and engineers worked withcorporations and entrepreneurs to create a new architecture for capitalism.Chicago, Illinois was an important place for these developments. After thedisastrous fire of 1871, architects and buildings exploited the new technologies todevelop the tall building or skyscraper, a particularly American building type.Louis Sullivan asserted independence from historical styles and affirmed themodern principle of “form follows function” with his innovative designs for tallbuildings.
