PSYC 1001 1st Edition Lecture 17Outline of Last Lecture I. Organization of the Nervous Systema. Automatic Nervous Systemb. Sympathetic Nervous Systemc. Central Nervous System II. EmotionsOutline of Current Lecture I. Central Nervous Systema. Brain and Spinal Chord i. Protectionii. Research MethodsCurrent LectureI. Brain and Spinal Chorda. Protectioni. Skull and Backbone1. Skull is super dense and hard for protection.ii. Meninges: 3 membranes covering the brain.1. Super thick and hard to cut.2. Meningitis is when these meninges are infected.iii. Cerebral Spinal Fluid System1. Fluid system that nourishes and cushions the brain.2. All of the empty spaces in the brain contain this fluid.a. If these spaces are bigger than normal then this can lead to a lot of issues (including schizophrenia).iv. Blood-Brain Barrier: Semi-permeable membrane that prevents some chemicals from passing to the brain.b. Spinal Cord: Connects the brain with the rest of the body through peripheral nervous system.II. Braina. Very jelly like and weighs about 3 pounds on average, but this depends on your body size.b. Research Methods:i. Clinical Observation: Observe them and when they die they examine their brains. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.ii. Manipulate the Brain1. Manipulate: Destroy parts of the brain.2. Usually use animals because it’s such a crude method.3. Another question: Does this actually apply to humans?iii. Electrical Stimulation1. Record the brain’s electrical activity. 2. This method is used in a lot of sleep studies.iv. Neuroimaging Techniques1. This has become a very popular method recently.2.
