This is the back part of the frontal lobe.a. Initiates movement/motor skills.ii. Broca’s Area1. Usually in the left hemisphere.2. Controls speech.3. Broca’s Aphasia: This is a disorder of speech production without a deficit in language comprehension. iii. Extreme frontal lobe (prefrontal)1. This is involved with personality, decision making and motivation.2. One exception of this part of the brain being damaged is Phineas Gage in 1848.a. Steel iron went through his skull and they left it in his brain and he lived for several years after that.i. But his mannerisms, emotions and personality all changed. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.b. Temporal Lobei. This is the primary auditory cortex.1. People who can play piano have a bigger primary auditory cortex.ii. Wernicke’s area: Involved with the comprehension of speech.iii. Wernicke’s Aphasia: This is when the Wernicke’s area is damaged.1. If this happens, you are articulate, but they have poor comprehension, repetition and they do not make a lot of sense.II. Differences in the right and left hemispheres.a. Split-Brain Operation: Two hemispheres are isolated by cutting the connecting fibers.i. Mainly the corpus callosum.b. Intact Braini. Functions do NOT show absolute lateralization (this is where one side or the other is completing all of the functions for a certain task).1. Languagea. For most people (90% right handed, 75% left handed) language functioning is centered in the left hemisphere.b. But the right hemisphere is involved in subtleties of language.i. This is active in solving, word problems and involving
