Officials of the Plural ExecutiveCurrent Lecture- Plural executive: the governor, elected department heads, and the secretary of state, as provided by the TX constitution- The Lt. Gov. is popularly elected constitutional official who serves as the president of the Senate and is first in the line of succession.- Lt. gov. is the most powerful TX official- functions in legislative branch- Attorney general: the constitutional official elected to head the office of the attorney general which represents the state government in lawsuits and provides legal advice tostate and local officials- Attorney general is on of the most visible and powerful officeholders in TX- State’s chief lawyer is a major player in making many important public policy decisions.- Office of the attorney general has about 4000 employees.- The comptroller of public accounts is an elected constitutional officer responsible for collecting taxes, keeping accounts, estimating revenue, and serving as tresureer for thestate.- One of comptrollers duties id to designate hundreds of TX financial institutions ( banks, savings associations, and credit unions)- Commissioner of the general land office: head of the general land office, this elected constitutional officer oversees the state’s extensive landholdings and related mineral interest, especially oil and gas leasing, for the benefit of the Permanent School Fund.- The permanent school fund is financed by oil and gas leases, rentals, and royalties which provide hundreds of millions of revenue for TX public schools.- The land office is responsible for awarding leases for oil, gas, and sulfur found on land owned by the state. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
