Different political interest organizationsII. lobbyingCurrent Lecture- Texas women political caucus is a woman’s organization that promotes equal rights and greater participation by women in the political arena- League of Women’s Voters of Texas: nonpartisan, public understanding of government issues and public participation of women- Hispanic Women’s group shows how interest groups can become more and more specific while still sharing common interest. There are literally thousands of interest groups- Lots of religious based interest groups. All in combination with different religions, goals, beliefs, partisanship. Therefore there are lots of religious based groups. - Green jobs promote the protection of the environment. CHIP greatly advocated these. - Public interest groups claim to promote the general interest of society, rather than more narrow specifications. - Texas power groups include: business oriented trade associations,(representing oil, gas, tobacco chemical manufactures, insurance, and railroads), professional association(physicians, lawyers, and teachers), and labor unions. Others would be bankers, realtors, truckers, etc..- Common traits of interest groups: strong links with both legislatures and bureaucrats.- Interest groups techniques: an action such as lobbying, personal communication, giving favors and gifts, grassroots activities- Lobbying: communicating with legislatures or other government officials on behalf on an interest group for the purpose of influencing decision makers- Electioneering: active campaigning by an interest group in support of, or opposition to,a candidate; actions urging the public to act on an issueThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
