Compensations for the legislature. Current Lecture- There are various qualifications for the house and senate members to meet.- A senator must be a U.S citizen, qualified TX voter, residence in district to be represented for at least one year preceding the election, must be a TX residence for 5 years preceding election, 26 years old- A HOR must be a U.S citizen, qualified TX voter, residence in district to be represented for at least one year preceding the election, must be a TX residence for 2 years preceding election, 21 years old- Some females of the Texas HOR wear red to show support for the American Heart Association. - More and more women are joining the legislature. In the past, there were very, very few women in the legislature. - Political Party Affiliation depends on who the dominant party in TX is. While this is nota guaranteed factor, it does hold great influence on who the members of the legislature are.- Most members of the legislature have a college degree. There is no formal law that says you must but it has become the norm for a good resume. - Religion is not supposed to affect who is a member of the legislature b/c of the religious freedom found in our constitution. - TX state senator receive a low pay, reasonable allowances and a relatively generous retirement pension after a minimum period of service. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
