Functions of political partiesCurrent Lecture- Political party: an organization influenced by political ideology whose primary interest is to gain control of government by winning elections.- Political parties are not mentioned in the TX or US constitution- George Washington thought that parties would divide the nation- Chief concerns of political parties: recruit, nominate, and put elected officials in office.- 2 main parties: republican and democrat- 1992- Ross Perrot (Reform Party=3rd party) affected the national level and splitting votes by winning 20% of votes. - 4 levels of political parties: national, state, county, prescient. No one level is in charge but all work together for party.- Temporary party organizations are in function prior to elections, then go away.- Prescient chair: 2 year terms elected at prescient convention, doesn’t get paid, generatephone banks, candidates information, work at county executive committee- County/district executive committee: arranges county convention. County chair is paid.- State executive committee: required by state law, must have 1 man and 1 woman, key strategist, raise funds for campaigns, and conduct state convention.- National convention delegates: represent parties to nominate primary candidate for presidential election- TX has a 2 step process of selecting person to go to national convention. First, primary elections are held, then another vote is taken at the convention known as a caucus. - In 2008, Hillary Clinton won primary in TX but Obama won caucus by landslide.- Political ideology: set of doctrine/ beliefs that form the basis of political system. AKA political orientation.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
