The Executive BranchII. governorCurrent Lecture- the executive branch of TX is noticeably different from that of the U.S.- article 4 establishes multi-level executive branch. - Governor shares power with officials, boards, commissions as mandated by legislative branch. - The sharing of powers is mostly due to the constitution of 1876- which was in response to Governor E.J Davis. - Recent acts of legislation have given the governor more power but still not worthy of the title: “ chief executive of the state”- 6 million has been spent to elect certain official. Some blame this large amount on the size of the state. - The governor uses personal powers such as arm twisting, persuasion, relating to the public, use PACs- Requirements to become the governor of TX: 30 years old, U>S citizen, 5 years of residence immediately presiding election. - Salary of governor: 150,000 $ a year- Governor also has own mansion and has expenses to maintain both it and his staff. - Governor also gets compensation for work related expenses. - If the governor is also a lawyer by profession, he must not practice law while he/she is the governor.- Governors often give their money to blind trust. These are usually maintained by a close friend and the governor has influence on these funds and they usually do very very well. Sounds good because its supposed to be blind, but still very corrupt. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
