Grow b/c diverse economy. 1980 oil boom put TX in rough spot, learned to diversify economy. - Dr. Harold Lasswell-defined politics-“ politics is the struggle that determines who gets what, when, and how. - Government: public institution with authority to allocate resources, formulate and adopt public policy. Have authority b/c TAXES!- Public policy: health issues, employment, transportation, education, public safety, energy policy, and prison relations. Designed to meet public need and is created by legislatures and think tanks.- Think tanks: think about and research public issues. Provide advise over issues. - Danielle Elizar: defined 3 types of political culture in U.S. individualistic, moralistic, andtraditionalistic.- individualistic culture: caused from westward migration. Believe govnt should maintain a stable society and be limited in size and scope. Believe people should be selsufficient.- Moralistic: caused from puritans/NE states. Believe the govnt should improve people’s lives, create a just society, and provide goods and services for the public need. Also believe people should be involved with the government and monitor officials.- Traditionalistic: caused from Old South/ feudalism. Believe that government is the domain of officials and should maintain the status quo.
