Meaning of intrapersonal, interpersonal, group and mass communication- Intrapersonal (the most prevalent form of communication): Communication you have with yourself. How you assign meaning to the world around you.- Interpersonal (one-on-one communication): Communication, either intentional or accidental, between two people. It can be verbal or nonverbal.- Group communication (often has a “leader”): Communication in which one person is communicating with an audience of two or more people. The roles of communicator and audience can be changing constantly.- Mass communication (society-wide communication): When an individual or institution uses technology to send a message to large, mixed audience, mostof whose members are not known to the sender.V. Define mass communications- Mass communication is a process, whereas the mass media are simply the technological tools used to transmit the messages of mass communication.VI. Ritual model- A model of the mass communication process that treats media use as an interactive ritual engaged in by audience members- How and why receivers consume media messages > 1. Attitudinal effect, behavioral effect, cognitive effect and psychological effect – Medium Effects – Marshal McLuhan- Attitudinal effect: People can develop feelings about a product, an individual, or an idea on the basis of media content. It is much easier to get people to form new opinions than to get them to change existing ones.- Behavioral effect: It includes actions such as clipping a coupon from a newspaper, buying a product, making a phone call, or voting for a candidate. It also includes imitating attractive behaviors (ex. Dressing a certain way).XVII. “The medium is the message” --- was coined by Marshal McLuhan- The method of message transmittal is a central part of the message.- The goal is not to transmit the message better, but to create a more overwhelming experience.- He was a pop icon, who was correct on many things with messageXVIII. Agenda-Setting theory – The traditional theory for studying media’s social impact- Media tells people what to think about- Media determining public discourse- This has changed greatly with the advent of the Internet and freer informationXIX. Users and Gratifications Theory – The theory suggests people demand media often, especially customized – is Opposite to Agenda-Setting theory - People engage in media because there’s something that they want out of it intentionally or not- Different forms of media compete to give the people what they want- How people use media for their need and gratification. In other words we can say this theory states what people do with media rather than what media does to people.XX. Synergy (industry concept) – When a large company can use small divisions to market content- Large companies using the strengths of various divisions to market content- Idea that two companies can merge and have better qualities and work betterXXI. Psychographic, demographic and geographic- Geographic (where people live; a method typically used to analyze potential markets for products and programs)- Demographic (community how you identify with those around you and how your relatedness forms a community)- Psychographic (ideological demographic – a combination of demographics)XXII.
