History of the Internet 1/26/15 10:03 PM [the Internet is not only a medium of its own, but also a convergence of all other types of media] Internet • Medium of choice o You can find anything on the internet • Selective exposure • Choose what you want to take in • People seek out to reinforce their own opinions instead of changing them History of the Computer • Began with the abacus – roman calculator • Early computer could fill a room – didn’t have technology we have today • Consisted of a similar set up as today • CPU – central processing unit o RAM – random access memory o Storage • Personal computers became affordable to the public in the 1970’s How Was the Internet Built? • Military begins to create network (universities also played a big role) • Sent information in chunks to be reassembled at their destination • Protocols are invented • Allowed otherwise incompatible computers to “speak” with each other • ARPANET- national network created by the internet • Would later connect with other networks leading to birth of civilian “net” Beginnings of the Internet • CompuServe- 1979 • Network limited to email and technical support • Not email as a social activity, but as a sharing data medium used by the military • Personal computers became really popular in the 80’s• America Online – 1989 Invention of the World Wide Web • WORLD WIDE WEB- a simplified means of navigating the internet based on hypertext links and graphical user interfaces • HYPERLINKS- highlighted words and images within a web page that allow the user to move to another site by pointing and clicking a mouse button • TIM BERNERS-LEE- inventor of the world wide web; made no profit and is not recognized for his accomplishments World Wide Web • MOSAIC- first web browser • Netscape and AOL merge • 1995 – military turns internet over to public sector • Technology continues to progress exponentially • BUFFERING- downloading and saving a video file at the same time it is being viewed • Led to invention of YouTube in 2005 • WEB 2.0- the idea of a second-generation internet that is highly participatory, allowing users to improve as they use it • Social Networking • Mashups • Wikis, blogs, podcasts • Internet becomes more user friendly and user based • Media Law • Drastic explosion of new issues • Napster issue Global • Able to reach many other countries through the internet • Some countries disallow internet use (Google debate) • Digital divide? Dangers of the Internet • Privacy • Hoaxes•
