The graded portion of your homework in this class will be done online in a program called MyMathLab. There will be an online homework assignment corresponding to each section of the text that we will cover. You may attempt your MyMathLab homework an unlimited number of times before you submit it, as long as you submitit by its due date. That means that it is possible for you to receive full credit on each assignment as long as you are willing to put in the time and effort. The homework assignments for all of the sections that we cover each week will be due before class on Tuesday of the following week. The amount of homework available in MyMathLab may not always be enough for you to master every topic, so I will also be providing you with a list of suggested problems from your text. The suggested homework from your text will not be collected or graded. When doing your homework, I would suggest the following: Complete the homework in MyMathLab. If you find a problem you are struggling with, try one of the following:- Use one of the help features within MyMathLab. A few of those features are:o Ask My Instructor: This features emails me the exact problem you are working on, with any specific notes you want to make. I can email you back any help that I can provide.o Help Me Solve This: This features gives you step-by-step hints.o View An Example: This features walks you through a worked out example similar to the problem you are working on.o Textbook Pages: This features brings up the precise pages in your text that deal with the topic you are working on.o Video/Animation: For some problems/topics there are videos or animations to view.Page 2 of 7- Print out the problem and either bring it to class with you to ask during the Question and Answer period at the beginning of class, or bring it with you to my office during my scheduled office hours. For those topics or problems that you are still struggling with, find problems like those in the suggested homework for more practice. Please expect to spend at least 10 hours a week on homework for this course. This may seems excessive, but it is well documented that this is the amount of time required to be successful in mathematics. Quizzes: There will be a few quizzes throughout the semester. Quizzes will be announced the class period before they are given. There will be no make up quizzes.Tests: Tests will cover the material covered in class and on the homework. You will be allowed one sideof one letter size sheet of notes to use during the test. These notes must be authored by you…you may not use any instructor prepared reviews in place of these notes. There will be no make up tests. If you miss an exam, for any reason, I will substitute your final exam grade for the missed test grade. I will do this only once. A second missed test will stand as a 0.Portfolio: Every student is required to complete the Portfolio Project as part of the MTH 120: Beginning Algebra experience. The project will count for 10% of the final course grade. The project will emphasize the application of MTH 120: Beginning Algebra mathematics content to realworld situations. Within the project, special emphasis will be placed on the use of mathematical skills that are of particular importance in the health field as well as skills needed for everyday living.Calculator: A basic scientific calculator will be required for this course. Incompletes: The incomplete policy of the college states that incompletes should be given only when a student’s work is “sufficient in quality but lacking in quantity.” In other words, in order to receive an Page 3 of 7incomplete you must be in good standing in the class (regular attendance, homework assignments completed). I will not give an incomplete simply to avoid a failing grade. Please Note: Students must earn a minimum 2.0 grade in all pre-requisites and all courses contributing to an earned certificate or degree. In other words, if you do not earn a 2.0 in this course and register for the next course in the sequence anyway, you will most likely be automatically dropped. If you need help: Math tutoring is available Monday through Friday in the Math Lab, located in McDivitt Hall, Room 244/245. The schedule varies each semester, so you will want to check with me or the lab consultant once the semester begins for the open hours. Besides the services of the tutor, thelab also contains tutorial video tapes and computer programs. Students requiring special assistance (including those affected by the Americans with Disabilities Act) should contact the Center for Student Success. This is the first step in acquiring the appropriate accommodations to facilitate your learning.Math 120 Core Course ObjectivesStudents completing Math 120 – Beginning Algebra should be able to:1. Simplify basic algebraic, exponential, rational, and radical expressions using mathematical processes and symbol manipulation.2. Use algebraic processes to solve linear, quadratic, rational, radical and literal equations and linear systems of equations.3. Demonstrate understanding of concepts of linear equations by: graphing a linear equation, finding x- and y-intercepts, and finding the slope of a line.4. Solve basic application problems using algebraic processes and procedural techniques.5. Demonstrate a knowledge of current technology and its uses and/or scientific issues.Math 120 Associate Degree OutcomesJackson Community College’s goal is to prepare students to live productive and meaningful lives. Implicit in this goal are efforts to prepare students to: (a) live and work in the twenty-first century, (b) be employed in situations which will require retraining several times
