Mathematics 120 Tuesday, Thursday Mrs. Babette Dickelman E-mail: [email protected] Phone JCC: 787-0800 Ask for McDivitt Hall and leave message. Necessary Materials: MyMathLab (available from bookstore or online) Course Pack for MTH 120 (available at bookstore) Calculator Optional Textbook: Beginning Algebra Tenth Edition by Lial, Hornsby, & McGinnis Mathematics 120 is a basic algebra class in which you will work with various mathematics operations and concepts, including the following: variables and variable expressions, integers, laws of exponents, equations (linear, quadratic, rational, radical, and absolute value), linear inequalities, linear systems, coordinate graphing, geometry, and problem solving. The purpose of this course is to develop a progressive understanding of more basic algebraic skills, concepts, and problem solving techniques; to obtain a sense of how and why algebra is used, and to be able to relate these problems and use the learned problem solving techniques to real life applications. Emphasis will be placed on understanding of terms, concepts, principles and theories rather than cramming and memorization. You are responsible for your own progress and meeting all deadlines as indicated on the syllabus. Please note that homework and quizzes are done in MyMathLab, and the computer is programmed to “cut off” at 11:00 a.m. on the day of the relevant test. In other words, you cannot hand homework in or take quizzes late. Class meetings will be used for discussion of the relevant topics and individual instruction. In addition, I will generally be available for 15 minutes both before and after class for those who have questions on the use of the calculator, study skills, and instructional material. If you have concerns, please let me know. Prerequisite: Math 098 or equivalent For most students, spending at least 2 hours in study time outside of class for every hour in class is a reasonable expectation. Please read the JCC Academic Honesty Policy. CLASS BEHAVIOR: Please either turn cell phones and beepers off or set to vibrate and place out of sight in your backpack or pocket or on the floor. If you are in class, I expect you to listen to the lecture and cooperate in the learning process. Please do not chat with friends, work on other courses, send or read text messages, read a book, or sleep during class; if you persist in such behavior, I will ask you to leave. Late arrivals disturb the class; if you are delayed, please enter the room unobtrusively and wait until the break or after class to pick up papers, etc. If you need to leave early, do so quietly with a minimum of disturbance. ATTENDANCE: I encourage you to attend regularly to help you build understanding, but I do not grade on attendance as such. However if you miss an in-class assignment, you may not make it up (see below). JCC requires all instructors to report student attendance and levels of academic success during the first half of the semester, so I will take attendance during that time period. Given this policy, if you have two consecutive absences or 4 non-consecutive absences during the first eight weeks, I will drop you from the course. If you receive a letter that informs you that you have been dropped, you need to go through a reinstatement process, which may include getting my signature on the form. After midterm, I cannot drop you; if you do not wish toreceive a grade for this class, you need to formally withdraw from the class. IN-CLASS WORK, ETC.: (10% of final grade) You have purchased a course pack, which will be the basis for taking notes during lectures as well as furnishing material for practice in class. You will be asked to hand in selected problems or other material most days. Generally we will discuss the types of problems and then you may work either individually or in a group to arrive at solutions. In-class assignments – those given during class and due on that day – are not accepted late. If you are not in class for any reason or forget to hand the assignment in, you will receive a “0” for that assignment. However, the three lowest grades will be dropped at the time final grades are calculated. HOMEWORK: (10% of final grade) Do at least some of each type of problem within 24 hours of class presentation as studies have proved that increases retention of material. All homework will be done on MyMathLab. You need to register for the program as soon as possible. No handwritten homework is accepted. You may print homework problems in order to work on them but will need to enter solutions in MyMathLab. Homework is grouped according to our class calendar; that is, all homework relevant to Test 1 will be due at 11:00 a.m. on September 17. You may rework problems until you are satisfied with your grade at any time prior to that date/time. After September 17, you may review any of the material and rework problems, asking for similar problems if you choose, but such activity does not change your grade. That pattern will be followed for the semester. Be sure to submit work. You may email me directly from MML by clicking on the contact instructor button. I am able to see what problem you are working with and can respond specifically to the situation. QUIZZES: (5% of final grade) Quizzes are done on line in MML and are due at 11:00 a.m. on the day of the relevant test (see Homework explanation). You have only one chance on the quiz – no asking for assistance or for a similar problem. You may only access a quiz one time, so if you do not finish, those problems are considered wrong. CAREER & LIFE SKILLS PROJECT: (5% of final grade) Math 120 has a required project due December 1. Details will be available at a later time. TESTS: (50% of final grade) All tests are cumulative and are to be taken during the class period indicated on the syllabus. If you are unable to take the test at the assigned time and do not schedule an earlier test time, a more difficult make-up test may be available if arrangements are made before the class period in which tests are returned, which will generally be the next class after the test. Otherwise, tests may not be taken late. Test 4 and the final exam may not be taken late. The grade of the first test taken late will not be penalized. However, the second late test will be penalized 15%, the third 30%, and the fourth 45%. You may use one sheet of
