Syllabus for MTH 120.15: Beginning AlgebraInstructor: Nicole GarciaTextbook: Beginning Algebra: Fourth Edition by Elayn Martin-GayContact Information: Phone: Karen Marler- Building Secretary, 787-0800 ext. 8152 E-mail [email protected] Office hours: I am available to help for one hour before or after class.1► Course Goals:The purpose of this course is to develop a progressive understanding of more basic algebraic skills, concepts, and problem solving techniques; to obtain a sense of how and why algebra is used, and to be able to relate these problems and use the learned problem solving techniques to real life applications. Great emphasis will be placed on understanding of terms, concepts, principles and theories rather than cramming and memorization.2► Course Outcomes: Students will be able to do:- Simplify basic algebraic, exponential, rational, and radical expressions using mathematical processes and symbol manipulation.- Use algebraic processes to solve linear, quadratic, rational, radical and literal equations and linear systems of equations.- Demonstrate understanding of concepts of linear equations: by graphing a linear equation, finding x and y intercepts, and finding the slope of the line.- Solve basic application problems using algebraic processes and procedural techniques.- Demonstrate knowledge of current technology and its uses and/or scientific uses.The Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. The Associate Degree Outcomes are addressed in this class:ADO 2. The ability to comprehend and use information including written and oral forms.ADO 3. Computational skills and understanding appropriate to the program of studyADO 4. Critical thinking and problem-solvingNOTE: This course does not meet the mathematics requirements for graduation from JCC.3► Course Topics and Assigned Homework See Class Calendar for timeline of topics covered and exams. To help you learn it is recommended that you read the textbook, work through the examples, attend class regularly, participate in class discussions,do assignments,and form a study group with other students in the class.4► Course Requirements and Grading System – based on 1000 points Requirements Points Percent of GradeExams**: Five exams at 150 points or 15% each.You may use a scientific calculator and the provided formula reference sheet. 750 60%Final Exam 200 20%Homework, Attendance and Participation 200 20%Page 1 of 3 (Syllabus for MTH 098: Prealgebra)TOTAL 1150 100%About extra credit….“The mathematics department strongly recommends that extra credit not beoffered in mathematics courses. In order to foster a collegiate environment, maintain the integrityof student grades, and provide for proper student placement and advancement through sequencedcourses, the department believes this to be in the best interests of both students and faculty. Extracredit is understood to include bonus points on a test or assignment, separate extra creditassignments, and other forms of providing opportunities for more than 100% credit.”Exams**: If you must miss a test, contact me before the test is given in class to make arrangements for a make-up. Once a test is returned, no make-up test will be given. See Class Calendar for dates of exams and the primary focus of each one. Please note that revisions to the Class Calendar may be necessary because of unforeseen circumstances. It is important to attend class regularly to be sure you are up to date on these revisions.Homework, Attendance and Participation: Attendance and participation in class is very important. Theinstructor will supply requirements for homework and attendance5► Late Work Policy Exams are to be taken during class on the day announced. Please notify me immediately if you are unable to be at an exam. Once a test is returned, no make-up test will be given. Competency exams must be completed by the deadline on the calendar. Instructor will supply late work policies for homework and attendance.6► Participation Grade To comply with Federal Regulations, I am to grade you after about two weeks, five weeks and eight weeks from the start of the course.These grades are letter grades (V-verifies that you are participating, H-means that you are participating but your work is not acceptable and need help to be successful, or Q-means that you have not participated and have really quit) that do not count toward your gpa. If you receive a Q, you are withdrawn from the course. After midterm I can no longer drop you from the course. IF you want to withdraw, you will need to do it yourself.7► Available HelpTutors (plus additional services for academic success) can be accessed by calling 796-8415 or by stopping by the Center for Student Success, Bert Walker Hall Room 123Students requiring special assistance (including those affected by the Americans with Disabilities Act) should contact the Center for Student Success. This is the first step in acquiring the appropriate accommodations to facilitate your learning.8► Other General Information- Instructional Philosophy: Education is a self-initiated, active, goal-directed process, leading to achange and/or expansion of the students understanding of and ability to use the subject material. The student is expected to be accountable for the learning process. The instructor should be viewed as a facilitator and resource person to assist in the process.- Academic Honesty: (Excerpt from JCC policy: contact Student Services for a copy of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.) Academic Honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others’ their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating or by helping others to do so. Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam or the course itself.- Audits: Must be registered during the first week of class.
