Course grade: Your course grade will be determined on the following basis.Hourly exams 60%Class projects, etc., 20% ADO Required Exercise 5%Final exam 15% 100%a) Hourly exams: Made up of problems typical of those studied in class. Exams are criterion referenced in nature and are closed book.b) Class projects, etc.: There are a variety of class and homework exercises to be completed. Several ofthe lowest will be dropped. No late homework will be accepted.c) ADO Required Exercise: A JCC institutional requirement.d) Final exam: Made up of problems typical of those studied in the course. This exam is also criterion referenced in nature and closed book.2. Grading Scale:Percentage Scored Grade 90 – 100 4.085 – 89 3.580 – 84 3.070 – 79 2.560 – 69 2.055 – 59 1.550 – 54 1.0 0 – 49 0.03. Students are expected to attend all classes. You are also expected to attend the class for the full class period or until the instructor indicates that the class is through for the period. To leave the class while it is in session because “ I have something better to do” is considered to be very rude behavior.4. Office hours will be established shortly. If you have questions or problems that are not answered in class or want to discuss something else with me, please see me during these hours or at some other mutually arranged time. This opportunity is a very important one for you and is one of the advantages of attending a community college. Be sure to take full advantage of it with me or any of your other instructors.Revised for Fall 2006Official Math Department Syllabus5. Time on task! An old student “rule-of-thumb” is: ”Two hours of study for every one hour of class.” I subscribe to this ratio. While it does not guarantee a good class grade, there is an excellent correlation between considerable study outside of class and good class grades for most students. Math/Algebra ability, like any skill-set, depends on practice, practice, practice. To become proficient at problem solving, do as many of the odd-numbered problems (those with answers in the back of the text) as you need to in each section, as needed.(Continued over)Revised for Fall 2006Official Math Department Syllabus6. Students are expected to take all exams at their scheduled times. Missed exams will be handled as follows:- No penalty for the first exam missed.- A 25% penalty will be assessed, in addition to any incorrect problem deductions, against any additional missed exams. (weather related poor road conditions excluded) In short, plan on not missing any of the exams as scheduled.7. Each assigned exercise, whether exam or class project, will be graded for a correct response. The instructor will examine all incorrect problems and partial credit will be awarded where appropriate. If correct answers have no accompanying work where solution steps are necessary to show process understanding, very limited credit is assigned. In other words, I grade how you solve the problem (process) not the answer only (product). Be sure that you understand this.8. All examinations will be closed book. A “cheat sheet” consisting of one side of an 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of paper will be allowed for those who desire to put
