Solve basic application problems using algebraic processes and procedural techniques.5. Demonstrate a knowledge of current technology and its uses and/or scientific issues.Math 120 Associate Degree OutcomesAll courses at Jackson Community College address one or more of the institutionally defined Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs). Math 120 contributes to the following outcomes.- The ability to comprehend and use information including written and oral forms (ADO 2)- Computational Skills and understanding appropriate to the program of study (ADO 3)- Critical thinking and problem solving (ADO 4)- A knowledge of science and technology (ADO 11)GRADING SCALEThe points you earn will fall into the following grading scale:90 – 100% 4.085 – 89% 3.580 – 84% 3.075 – 79% 2.565 – 74% 2.060 – 64% 1.555 – 59% 1.050 – 54% 0.50 – 49% 0.0COURSE REQUIREMENTSPage 1 of 6Homework: 20% of final gradeEffective learning and positive grades usually correlate with diligent homework efforts, especially in mathematics. Homework will be assigned in advance for all of the chapters we will cover in thiscourse. Please compile the homework sequentially in a folder that I will collect and grade during the exams. Show your work. I typically grade homework on how complete it is, not how accurate.Tests: 50% of the final gradeThere will be 5 closed-book exams during this class covering approximately two chapters each. If you must miss a test, please contact me before the test is given in class to make arrangements for a make-up. Once a test is returned, no make-up tests will be given. Students are to return all tests after grading and review. You may keep the test reviews to help with your final exam.ADO Report: 10% of the final gradeSpecifics about this report are discussed later in the syllabus. It is strongly suggested that you begin work early on this project. It may be turned in any time prior to the due date if you are finished.Final Exam: 20% of the final gradeThis exam will be standard for all MTH 120 classes. The same details about tests apply to the final including make-ups.CLASSROOM ATTENDANCE POLICYWhile I will not specifically grade on attendance, I will keep track of it. I believe that good attendance correlates highly with effective learning and that will lead to good grades. Ultimately, you are responsible for all assigned work either expected in or assigned during the missed class. I also expect you to take the initiative to learn what was missed in class. One way to do this is to contact other students or myself. Audits or withdrawals in this class should follow college guidelines. If you need information about these please contact the college and inform me if your status changes.CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR POLICYEssentially, it is all about mutual respect.Disrupting the classroom teaching and learning process will not be tolerated. While teaching, I expect students to be actively listening because I may ask questions. Students may ask questions during lectures as long as they are directed to the instructor and not their classmates. Group-work projects and break-time will allow opportunities to talk to classmates. If behavior is unacceptable, the person will be asked to leave class and not return until I’ve met with them to discuss a plan for improved classroom behavior. Also, cell phones and pagers should either be turned off or set to a silent alert. If this is not possible, please discuss alternatives with the instructor prior to class.ADO ASSIGNMENT (Associate Degree Outcomes)Page 2 of 6In MTH 120, we will address the ADO that relates algebra mathematics to the real world. You will be receiving a separate handout for this assignment (Due by session #18 10/24/2006).COLLEGE INCOMPLETE POLICYAn incomplete is only given in accordance with JCC policy and at the instructor's discretion for students who can show that they have completed most of their coursework satisfactorily, but because of illness or other unusual circumstances need an extension of time to finish the remainder of the requirements. A written plan for making up the missing work within one semester must be completed by the student by course end and accepted by the instructor. For any incomplete not finished by the designated time period, the "I" will remain permanentlyon your transcript. You will then have to register and repeat the
