GENERAL INFORMATIONMathematics 120.04 Tuesday, ThursdayMrs. Babette DickelmanE-mail: [email protected] Phone JCC: 787-0800 Ask for McDivitt Hall and leave message. Necessary Materials: Beginning Algebra, 4th Edition by K. Elayn Martin-GayA calculator Mathematics 120 is a basic algebra class in which you will work with various mathematics operations and concepts. You, as the student, are responsible for your own progress and meeting all deadlines as indicated on the syllabus. Class meetings will be used for discussion of the relevant topics and individual instruction. In addition, I will be available for 15 minutes after class for those who have questions on the use of the calculator, study skills, and instructional material. If you have concerns, please let me know. Please read the JCC Academic Honesty Policy.CLASS BEHAVIOR: Please either turn cell phones and beepers off or set to vibrate and place out of sight: in your backpack or pocket or on the floor. If you are in class, I expect you to listen to the lecture and cooperate in the learning process. Please do not chat with friends, work on other courses, send text messages, or sleep during class time; if you persist in such behavior, I will ask youto leave. ATTENDANCE: I encourage you to attend regularly to help you build understanding; however, I do not grade on attendance. Late arrivals disturb the class; if you are delayed, please enter the room unobtrusively and wait until the break or after class to pick up papers, etc. JCC requires all instructors to report student attendance and levels of academic success during the first half of the semester. Given this policy, if you have two consecutive absences or 4 non-consecutive absences during the first eight weeks, I will drop you from the course. After midterm, I cannot drop you; if you do not wish to receive a grade for this class, you need to formally withdraw from the class; the last date to withdraw witha “W” is Dec. 3. HOMEWORK: Homework is suggested so you may practice; you will determine just how much you should do in order to understand the concepts. Do at least some of each type of problem within 24 hours of class presentation as studies have proved that increases retention of material. The suggested problems will be discussed but not collected and graded. The homework assignments are organized to cover the sections relevant to each test; "e/o odd" indicates every other odd problem. Answers to odd-numbered problems are in the back of the book. I suggest you do the problems for a section after that information is presented in class; then at the next class meeting, you can ask questions before you take the quiz. For most students, two hours of study time outside of class for each scheduled in-class hour is a reasonable expectation.QUIZZES: Frequent homework quizzes will be given. These will be selected problems from suggested homework; you may use only your homework as reference – no other notes, no book, no people. This means that if you did the selected problem, you may simply copy your work onto the quiz paper (Work mustbe shown). If you haven’t done that particular problem, you may work the alternative problem given on the paper. Quizzes over homework will be given after you have had the opportunity to ask questions about the section. You receive partial credit for attempting the quiz, so you can never get a “0” on a quiz if you are in class. These quizzes may or may not be announced in advance. Missed quizzes may not be made up regardless of reason for absence. The lowest two quiz grades will be dropped and the average determined on the remaining grades. Your quiz average is 15% of your final grade.PORTFOLIO: Math 120 has a required portfolio due Nov. 21, which is 10% of yourfinal grade. Details will be available at a later time. PROJECT SUCCESS DAY: On October 3, classes will not be held at JCC. Instead, the college is offering a wide variety of workshops and other events to help insure your success in your courses. Attendance is optional, but I strongly encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities available on that dayTEST POLICY: All tests are cumulative and are to be taken during the class period indicated on the syllabus. If you are unable to take the test at the assignedtime and do not schedule an earlier test time, a more difficult make-up test may be available if arrangements are made before the class period in which tests are returned, which will generally be the next class after the test. Otherwise, tests may not be taken late. Test 5 and the final exam may not be taken late. The grade of the first test taken late will not be penalized. However, the second late test will be penalized 15%, the third 30%, and the fourth 45%. You may use one sheet of notebook paper (front and back- not two sheets with writing on one side) on all tests and the final exam. You may also use your calculator on tests and the final exam but you may neither share calculators nor use cell phones as calculators during tests. There are no retakes on tests or exams. Your test average is 55% of final grade. No test grades will be dropped. FINAL EXAM: The Final Exam is cumulative and represents 20% of your semestergrade. You may use one page of notes and your calculator on the final. You may neither share calculators nor use a cell phone as a calculator on the final exam. GRADING POLICY: Tests – 55%; Quizzes –15%; Final Exam – 20%; Portfolio –10% Weighted Average Course Grade90-100 4.085- 89 3.580- 84 3.075- 79 2.565- 74 2.060- 64 1.555-59 1.0 0-54 0.0GENERAL INFORMATIONHelp is available (in addition to working with me) in the Center for Student Success, Bert Walker Room 118.
