HIST 106 1st Edition Lecture 18 Outline of Last Lecture I Introduction II The war to end all wars III The fourteen points IV The Paris peace conference Outline of Current Lecture I Nativism II The Ku Klux Klan III Business is Booming Current Lecture Nativism o Foreign connections Mainly people from eastern Europe Jews people trying to escape Russia Soviet Union and quite a few Irish people The red scare came before this and Americans see this red threat coming from Russian Bolsheviks Bolshevism was very popular all over Europe and a lot of people were coming from Europe Another idea that was very popular in Europe was anarchism o Immigration Nativism we are Americans and we do not need immigrants polluting the job market and minds of other Americans Sacomenseti case two guys were arrested for robbing a bank and murdering a bank personnel both were immigrants and one had very loose ties to an anarchist group the prejudices against immigrants and anarchists were very apparent in this case This was a huge case and this case will feed the prejudices accompanying nativism The case itself became so famous because it fit into the ideas that many Americans had about immigrants o Literacy requirement in 1917 You have to be able to read English to a certain degree and the hope is to keep uneducated immigrants out of America o Immigration act of 1924 No more than 2 of 1890s immigration numbers Will attempt to limit eastern European immigration into the US and hoped to turn off the tide of immigrants from eastern and southern Europe as well as no Chinese This will leave open the border from Latin America and these immigrants will be welcomed into the country because of the need for farm labor The Ku Klux Klan o 100 American movement Becomes more dangerous in the fact that there was an equal amount of violence but more that it was more widely accepted Show themselves as more of a fraternal brotherhood organization and march openly No longer a group that is discriminatory against blacks but it was 100 American group 100 American means associated with Klan Anglo Saxon Protestants no other religion o 8 million members by 1925 Will become very popular in the north because of the anti Catholicism associated with the Klan Will spread rumors that Catholics will have weapons in the basements of the church and are just waiting for the pope to get the word to take over America The 1925 number is the peak of the clan and the numbers will go down after that Will go down because of the immigration act and there will be a lot of scandals in the clan leadership o One of the leaders of the clan in Ohio gets arrested for killing a hooker and throwing her body off of the train This will not go down too well with people because it is a Christian organization o White and protestant Immigrants were also discriminated against because they were not part of the ideal of 100 American The idea of the south will rise again comes up in the 1920s as well Business is Booming o Return to normalcy Mass production consumption short hours shorter work days highways The shorter hours does not really mean higher wages because that would not be a sustainable model The economic success is a direct correlation to the economic success that came from the first world war By the end of world war one over half of the world s gold was in the US o Warren G Harding Wins the 1920 election and advertises himself as the guy who will return the US to normalcy His administration is probably one of the most corrupt administrations in the US The Ohio gang Warrens members in his administration Harding will end up dying in office in 1923 and his VP Calvin Coolidge will take over o Teapot Dome Scandal Takes place from about 1920 23 Albert Duvol secretary of the navy will take give out the navy s oil to friends of his at a very favorable rate and will make a lot of money himself Goes on until 1922 when it is discovered and from 1922 23 will go under a huge investigation Albert Duvol is the first sitting cabinet member to go to jail o Calvin Coolidge Nickname was silent Cal because during his administration he will hardly say anything and his inaugural address will be the shortest ever 4 sentences Was not a bad president was not corrupt but was not an inspirational president and won the 1924 election for himself Allowed business to do as it may and this is why business was booming o Herbert Hoover Election of 1928 was between Herbert Hoover and Al Smith but neither wanted to change really anything Al Smith was Irish and catholic not really in his favor Herbert Hoover was for prohibition protestant and represents normalcy Wanted to engage the immigration population and hoped to win that way Will be a 1920s mediocre president in the 1930s and will take office less than a year before the financial collapse By the time Hoover leaves office the unemployment rate will by 25
