WatergateCurrent LectureEnd of Vietnam -Nixon runs against Hubert Humphrey; Nixon promises peace with honor; Humphrey wants to continue war-Nixon wins election and starts vietnamization= get troops out; resumes bombing Cambodia to protect troop withdrawl and to show them what the U.S. could do to them if they decide to become communist-on the home front citizens begin protesting- a third of campuses shut down, people stop going to work and to school to show they are against the war -Congress repeals the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution so that Nixon could stop doing what he pleases (bombing)-election is approaching which means Nixon is rushed to end the war so he can get reelected -Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho sign a peace agreement calling for an end to all cease-fire violations in South Vietnam; the settlement included an end to all military activities; an end to U.S. flights over North Vietnam; the resumption of U.S. talks on aid to North Vietnam-Nixon was reelected and decides to throw out the peace agreement, bombs North Vietnam a.k.a Christmas BombingWatergate - June 17, 1972, several burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee-they had been caught while attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret documentsThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.-Nixon gave a speech in which he swore that his White House staff was not involved in the break-in-he arranged to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in “hush money” to the burglars- seven conspirators were indicted on charges related to the Watergate affair, five pleaded guilty and avoided trial; the other two were convicted in January 1973- John Dean testified before a grand jury about the president’s crimes-they also testified that Nixon had secretly taped every conversation that took place in the Oval Office-Nixon agreed to give some but not all of the tapes- he gave 7 out of 9 to them-House of Representatives voted to impeach him for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, criminal cover-up and several violations of the Constitution-August 5, Nixon released the tapes, which provided evidence of his contribution in the Watergate
