Cold WarCurrent LectureCold War-the war really began during WWII-a rivalry between the U.S and the Soviet Union-the U.S. was to blame for the cause-origins: who would Europe, the bomb, Containment, Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, NATO, National Security Act, NSC-68-Postdam: "Potsdam Declaration" described Japan's present condition, gave the terms for her surrender and stated the Allies' intentions concerning her postwarstatus. It ended with an ultimatum: Japan must immediately agree to unconditionally surrender, or face "prompt and utter destruction"-Bomb: Manhattan Project, U.S. Disarmament Agency, Soviet Disarmament Plan-Hard-Line Policy-Truman announces he doesn’t want to watch over the soviets anymore; “Long Telegram”- George Kennan tried to figure out communistmentality, Soviets wanted to exploit across the world-Truman Doctrine-stated that the U.S. would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them from falling into the Soviet Sphere, it pledged the US to contain communism in Europe and elsewhere and impelled the US to support any nation with both military and economic aid if its stability was threatened by communism or the Soviet Union-Marshall Plan- American initiative to aid Europe, in which the United States gave economic support to help rebuild European economies after the end of World War II in order to prevent the spread of Soviet Communism; goals of the United States were to rebuild war-devastated regions, remove trade barriers, modernize industry, and make Europe prosperous again-NATO- an international organization composed of the US, Canada, Britain, and a number of European countries: established by the North Atlantic Treaty for purposes of collective security; in 1997 a treaty of cooperation with These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
