New Deal IICurrent LectureRadical Voices -Huey Long: “Kingfish”, supported FDR, governor of Louisiana, his plan to solve the Great Depression: “Share our Wealth” which proposed new wealth redistribution measures in the form of a net asset tax on corporations and individuals to curb the poverty and homelessness endemicnationwide, advocated federal spending on public works, schools and colleges, and old age pensions, he gathers a lot of followers and is seen as a threat to capitalism, which makes FDR worry about his plans-Father Charles Coughlin-he starts a radio show in which he discusses political issues, develops followers to tell the nation who is at fault, blames greedy bankers, supporter of FDR and he suggests FDR nationalizes banking system. FDR is against the idea-he wants to solve it not destroy it, Father Charles turns on him and attacks the Jews, this worries FDR because he has another radical voice to worry about-Dr. Francis Townsend: most successful out of the three, he sits outside one day and watches people dig in his trash for food which brings him to the idea of the Townsend Plan, his plan is to consider everyone over the age of 16 and gives them $200 monthly pensions, but they have to spend the money every month in order to get the next month’s moneyNew Deal II -Wagner Act: guarantees basic rights of private sector employees to organize into trade unions, engage in collective bargaining for better terms and conditions at work, and take collective action including strike if necessary, does not apply to These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
