Most demand that we be responsible first and foremost to the people we study. Anthropological ethics does not harm and this is voluntary informed consent.History: Anthropologist go to WarAlexander Leighton: Who worked at the Office of War Information in WWII said that most administrators there used anthropology “as a drunk uses a lamppost: for support rather than illumination.”Applying AnthropologyApplied anthropology is the application of anthropological data, perspectives, theory, and methods to identify, assess, and solve contemporary social problems.All four sub disciplines have an applied component. Ethnographic method is one of the most valuable tools in applying anthropology. Applied anthropologists are likely to adopt local, grassroots perspective in approaching problem. Appropriate roles for applied anthropologists:- Identify the locally perceived needs for change- Work with local people to design culturally appropriate, socially sensitive change- Protect the local people’s interestsDevelopmentDevelopment is the branch of applied anthropology that focuses on social issues in, and the cultural dimension of economic development. Effective development draws indigenous cultural practices and social structures. Two roles for the anthropologists; first to be the ‘culturalbreaker’ and secondly anthropologists are the social policy developer/analyzer.Medical anthropologyMedical anthropology is the study of disease, health problems, health care systems, and theories about illness in different cultures and ethnic
