Culture VocabularyCurrent Lecture DescriptionIn today’s lecture the notes introduce the ideal of culture as well as defining it throughand anthropologist’s mindset. There’s also important vocabulary at the end of the notes.CultureCulture is a set of learned behaviors and ideas that human beings acquire as members ofa society. Culture is “learned, shared and symbolic”. Learned meaning there’s a process of‘learning’ culture or enculturation. Enculturation is when on fully understands thecharacteristics and norms of a culture. Shared because there’s a problem with defining groupsof people by ethnicities so ideals and values are shared. Symbolic in a sense because there aremeanings and ideas by which we understand the word. A perfect example of culture underthese three qualifications is language. Language is learned by individuals, shared because it’sused as a sense of communication and symbolic because communication isn’t just a commoditybut it’s a privilege in some cultures.Cultural UniversalsIn addition to Lecture ones definition of a cultural universal as being a connectionbetween individuals and cultures in lecture two one is introduced to a cultural universal asallowing your personal culture to adapt to our environment and experiences we have. Cultureattaches meaning to common life experiences.Introduction to Culture: Important Vocabulary1. Cultural relativism- Studying another culture according to its own terms. An examplewould be traveling abroad with a school program and living with a host family. Here yourintroduced to a new cultures ideals and adapting your personal lifestyle to become anaccommodation to their culture.2. Ethnocentrism- Judging cultures from perspective of your own culture. This is a moreformal word for stereotype. A stereotype can be defined by categorizing an individual orgroup of people based off of personal cultural ideals and beliefs or physicalcharacteristics. These stereotypes can be based off of race, height, or
