ANTH 210 Lecture 2 Outline of Last Lecture 1 Anthropology Study of Humanity A Fields of Anthropology 2 Cultural Universals Definition and example 3 Anthropology vocabulary Ethnography Ethnology Holistic 4 Physical Biological Anthropology A Human Evolution B Primateology C Biological Variation 5 Introduction to Race A Evolution of Dark Skin B Evolution of Light Skin 6 Archaeology Anthropology Introduction 7 Applied Anthology Introduction Outline of Current Lecture 1 Introduction of Culture 2 Cultural Universals 3 Culture Vocabulary Current Lecture Description In today s lecture the notes introduce the ideal of culture as well as defining it through and anthropologist s mindset There s also important vocabulary at the end of the notes Culture Culture is a set of learned behaviors and ideas that human beings acquire as members of a society Culture is learned shared and symbolic Learned meaning there s a process of learning culture or enculturation Enculturation is when on fully understands the characteristics and norms of a culture Shared because there s a problem with defining groups of people by ethnicities so ideals and values are shared Symbolic in a sense because there are meanings and ideas by which we understand the word A perfect example of culture under these three qualifications is language Language is learned by individuals shared because it s used as a sense of communication and symbolic because communication isn t just a commodity but it s a privilege in some cultures Cultural Universals In addition to Lecture ones definition of a cultural universal as being a connection between individuals and cultures in lecture two one is introduced to a cultural universal as allowing your personal culture to adapt to our environment and experiences we have Culture attaches meaning to common life experiences Introduction to Culture Important Vocabulary 1 Cultural relativism Studying another culture according to its own terms An example would be traveling abroad with a school program and living with a host family Here your introduced to a new cultures ideals and adapting your personal lifestyle to become an accommodation to their culture 2 Ethnocentrism Judging cultures from perspective of your own culture This is a more formal word for stereotype A stereotype can be defined by categorizing an individual or group of people based off of personal cultural ideals and beliefs or physical characteristics These stereotypes can be based off of race height or weight
