Math 1314.196 College Algebra South Plains College Taught at SUNDOWN HIGH SCHOOL by Darla LacyMATH 1314.196 COLLEGE ALGEBRA INSTRUCTOR Darla Lacy 806/893-3844 TEXTBOOK COLLEGE ALGEBRA, (4th ed.), by Blitzer. CALCULATOR A TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is suggested. ATTENDANCE Attendance and effort are the most important activities for success in this course. If you are absent, you are responsible for doing your assignment before the next class. A student who misses five classes may be administratively dropped with a grade of F or W. Please talk to the instructor to verify if you have successfully dropped the course. GRADING 10% - homework 30% - quizzes 60% - tests AVERAGE GRADE IN COURSE 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D 0-59 F TUTORING I will be in my classroom by AT LEAST 7:00 a.m. each morning if help is needed. Other tutorial times may be arranged. PRE-REQUISITES Algebra I, Algebra II, GeometryCOURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Represent functions (linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, rational, radical, inverse) graphically, numerically, and analytically. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of function notation and operations including inverses and compositions of function. 3. Compute average rates of change and interpret as slope of a secant line. 4. Recognize and apply the appropriate function to solve problems involving tables, graphs, equations or words. 5. Use matrix reduction techniques to solve systems of linear equations. 6. Create a system of linear equations modeling an application problem. 7. Recognize and graph the equations of conic sections. 8. Use conic sections to model an application problem. 9. Apply studied principles and skills to new situations in addition to situations that mirror those on the homework and those shown in class. 10. Apply the Binomial Theorem to expand binomials of higher degree. USE OF CALCULATORS Although calculators and computers have made a distinct difference in the study of mathematics, they have not replaced mathematical thought. Calculators cannot decide whether to add, subtract, multiply, or divide in order to solve a problem! The student must make this decision. At that point, the calculator can be used to efficiently determine the solution to the problem. Graphing calculators can provide important graphical and numerical support to the validity of a mathematical solution. They are capable of exposing errors in logic and pointing to patterns. They are, however, incapable of possessing mathematical insight. Therefore, calculators will be used to complement the human mind, not replace it!EQUAL OPPORTUNITY: South Plains College strives to accommodate the individual needs of all students in order to enhance their opportunities for success in the context of a comprehensive community college setting. It is the policy of South Plains College to offer all educational and employment opportunities without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability or age. DISABILITIES: Students with disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notify the Special Services Office early in the semester so that the appropriate arrangements may be made. In accordance with federal law, a student requesting accommodations must provide acceptable documentation of his/her disability to the Special Services Coordinator. For more information, call or visit the Special Services Office in the Student Services Building, 894-9611 ext. 2529,
