Course Description This course provides a standard course in college-level algebra. A survey of algebra topics is included. This course is designed primarily for liberal arts majors, but students in the sciences will find the course an excellent review of algebra concepts before proceeding on to higher mathematics courses. All graded homework for this course is conducted online (see Assignment Policy). Extensive use of the Internet is used to access course material. How This Course Is Conducted This course is an online course, which means that you will access course information and respond to me and/or other students through the use of the Internet. I use Blackboard to deliver and manage this course. Blackboard is a software package that was written to helpmanage online courses. There is a Blackboard student tutorial available to you in My Courses on your Blackboard home page. This tutorial is called Blackboard Learn 9 Student Orientation. I encourage all students to view this orientation. Just a few minutes of your time will acquaint you with and make you feel more comfortable using Blackboard. Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course and receiving a passing grade, the student will master at least 70% of the course objectives. To complete these objectives, the student must already be prepared to factor algebraic expressions, reduce, add, subtract, multiply, divide, and simplify rational expressions, and simplify, add, subtract, multiply, and divide exponential and radical expressions. The course objectives the student will be able to master are: 1. Find solutions for: linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations (by factoring, extraction of roots, completing the square, quadratic formula, and graphing), quadratic type equations, radical equations, higher order polynomials and inequalities, absolute value equations and inequalities, logarithm and exponential equations 2. Translate word statements into mathematical statements and solve 3. Recognize a function given any of the three forms (set of ordered pairs, equations, or graph) 4. Determine the domain and range of functions 5. Write equations of lines and circles given pertinent information 6. Identify the basic characteristics of the graphs of polynomial functions and sketch the graphs 7. Find the solutions for systems of equations and systems of inequalities by using one or more of the following techniques: elimination, substitution, graphing, Cramer's Rule, Gauss-Jordan Elimination, matrix algebra 8. Expand a binomial raised to an integral power Required Materials MyMathLab Student Access Kit This Kit is available at either SPC Bookstore (Levelland campus or Reese Center) or online at: https://register.pearsoncmg.com/reg/buy/coursebuy.jsp;jsessionid=CerbB2tv4DJhmAHYcaWwx9GAaV3Zdtq8ZOewnnIOR2UdjdYwK2sQ!-2110088019 To begin purchasing online, you will need the Instructor's Course ID given below in the MyMathLab information. Detailed information about MyMathLab follows. Do not use this link if you plan to purchase a hard-copy textbook. Before you purchase a hard-copy textbook, please know that the entire textbook (including answers to the odd-numbered exercises) is available via MyMathLab. This means that you can opt NOT to purchase a hard-copy of the textbook and purchase only the Student Access Kit. Many of you prefer to have a textbook in hand, so please read the textbook information under Optional Materials before you purchase. TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 Plus, or TI-84 Plus Silver Edition Graphing Calculator You MUST have a graphing calculator for this class. If you own another brand or model of calculator, you may not be able to perform many of the calculator tasks presented in this course. You use these other calculators at your own risk. I will provide neither tutoring nor alternate assignments for you due to the use of an alternate calculator. The Lecture Notes that I have written for this course contain screen shots of the TI-83 model calculator. All TI-83 and TI-84 models look and work identically to the one illustrated in the Lecture Notes. Other models and brands are quite different and should not be used for this class. Any calculator solving and/or checking technique shown in the Lecture Notes are "fair game" on tests. You may use and are many times required to use these techniques on tests.I encourage you to purchase your Student Access Kit (either with or without the hard copy textbook) immediately to register for this class online. Do not wait until class begins to start purchasing your materials. Class begins on January 17th. This means that you should be ready to do math on January 17th. Get your materials early, and be ready!
