COURSE DESCRIPTION: MATH 1314 (501) College Algebra. Prerequisite: Two units of high school algebra or Math 0320. A standard course in college algebra. Quadratic equations; ratio and proportion; variation; binomial theorem; progressions, inequalities; complex numbers; theory of equations; determinants and matrices; linear programming; mathematical induction; permutations and combinations. B. GOAL OF THE COURSE: The goal of this course is to provide a transferable course in college algebra and to provide a thorough study in standard university-level algebra necessary for further studies. II. SPECIFIC COURSE/INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS: A. TEXT: “COLLEGE ALGEBRA” (5e) by Robert Blitzer B. CALCULATORS: A calculator with a power function and a log button is required for this course. C. SUPPLIES NEEDED: A spiral notebook to accommodate all homework assignments. D. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance and effort are the most important activities for success in this course. If you miss more than five classes you will be dropped from the class.. E. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The guidelines for academic integrity set forth in the current South Plains College catalog will be followed. F. ASSIGNMENT POLICY: Assignments will be made at each class meeting and should be worked in the spiral notebook. The homework practice is required in order to more fully understand each topic. Questions over these problems will be discussed at the beginning of each class meeting. G. GRADING POLICY: Your final grade will be figured according to the following percentages: Four major tests average – 50% Homework & MyMathLab - 25% Final Exam - 25% The final exam grade (if it is higher) will be used to replace the lowest grade. A TEST OR QUIZ MISSED WILL COUNT AS ZERO. (see Make-Up Policy below) GRADING SCALE: 100-90=A 69-60=D 89-80=B below 60=F 79-70=C H. MAKE-UP TEST POLICY: If a student is absent when a major test is given, the student will receive a grade of zero for the test. At the end of the semester, the student will be allowed to replace ONE missed major test grade with the grade on the final exam. A second missed test will be averaged as a zero. The final exam will also be averaged with the other test scores and homework to determine a student’s semester grade. I. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITES: 1. Attend class and be aware of announcements made in class. 2. Inform instructor of late arrival immediately after class. 3. Work homework problems early enough to seek help if needed and work extra problems as required to understand. 4. Be familiar with the syllabus, especially attendance, grading and test policies. 5. Take care of personal needs before and after class. 6. Keep all electronic devices (pagers, cell phones, etc) in mute or off mode. J. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITY ACT STATEMENT: Students with Disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notify the Special Services Office early in the semester so that the appropriatearrangements may be made. In accordance with federal law, a student requesting accommodations must provide acceptable documentation of his/her disability to the Special Services Coordinator. For more information, call or visit the Special Services Office in the Building 8, Room 811 of Reese Center, 806-885-3048 extension 4675. K. By promoting diversity and intellectual exchange, we will not only mirror society as it is, but also model society as it should and can be. COURSE OUTCOMES Upon completion of this course and receiving a passing grade, the student will be able to: 1. Solve and graph linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. 2. solve and graph linear, quadratic, and rational inequalities. 3. identify and simplify complex numbers. 4. apply midpoint, distance, and circle formulas. 5. analyze and graph polynomial functions. 6. analyze and graph rational functions. 7. create and solve systems of equations with algebraic techniques which include matrices and determinants. 8. apply the Binomial Theorem to expand binomials of higher degree.Math 1314.502 College Algebra MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Division of Arts & Science SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE Larry McBee Spring
