1 Independent Study Math/College Algebra (Math 1314) Patton Springs Dual-Credit General Course Syllabus PURPOSE OF COURSE: To provide a standard course in college algebra, to provide a fundamental background in algebra to meet the mathematics requirement for the core curriculum, and to provide a basis for further study in mathematics. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Topics included are: algebraic expressions, complex numbers, linear equations, quadratic equations, equations of higher order, inequalities, relations and functions, polynomials and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations and inequalities, determinants, matrices, linear programming, and the binomial theorem. TEXTBOOK: College Algebra, Mark Dugopolski; 2nd edition. VIDEOS: There are videos of many topics available to be viewed online. Go to http://southplainscollege.blackboard.com. Type mvideos for both the username and password. You can then find the appropriate course and the topic in which you are interested. SUPPLIES: You will need notebook paper, a pencil, a red pen, graph paper, a spiral notebook, a 3-ring homework notebook, and a graphing calculator. If you are taking more mathematics, it is highly recommended that you purchase a graphing calculator, such as the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition or the TI-Nspire. HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned daily and kept in a separate notebook to be turned in at any time. If you are absent, make sure you call or email to get the assignment you missed. YOU are responsible for keeping up to date and being prepared. Late homework WILL NOT be accepted. QUIZZES: Weekly quizzes will be given. If an absence is school-related, the quiz missed may be made up; otherwise there will be NO make-up quizzes. At least 3 quizzes will be dropped at the end of the year. GRADING*: College - Homework notebooks: 10%; Quizzes: 50%; Major exams: 30%; Comprehensive Final: 10%. You will receive two different grades. One is for Independent Study Math (local) and the other is for Math 1314 (college). Grades are separated by each six weeks for I.S. Math, whereas your College Algebra grades are cumulative.2 STUDENT RESPONSIBLITIES: 1. Attend class and be aware of announcements made in class. 2. Work homework problems early enough to seek help if needed. 3. Work extra problems as required to understand each topic. 4. See instructor for additional help at instructor’s convenience. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Whenever absences become excessive and, in the instructor’s opinion, minimum course objectives cannot be met due to absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES/COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this course and receiving a passing grade, the student will be able to: 1. solve and graph problems involving linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions 2. solve and graph linear, quadratic, and rational inequalities 3. identify and simplify complex numbers 4. apply midpoint, distance, and circle formulas 5. analyze and graph polynomial functions 6. analyze and graph rational functions 7. create and solve systems of equations with algebraic techniques, with matrix techniques, and with determinants 8. apply the Binomial Theorem to expand binomials of higher
