NMIX 2020 2 30 3 20 Pr Shamp 32 September 5 What Hath God Wrought JRF 5K is tomorrow if you bring him a business card he ll give you a chit How feasible do our projects need to be The expectation is to come up with something that you know can be done not necessarily that you know how to do but that someone else could do Intellectual history of the Internet Timeline 1844 Samuel F B Morse sent the first telegraph message The message said What hath God Wrought This was the first time that we had a new speed for sending information Transatlantic cable allowed all parts of the world to be connected so that people could communicate in real time George R Stibitz used electrical signals over telephone wires to solve a math problem from Dartmouth to NY This was the first time we had distance computation The soviet union lost a satellite Sputnik in space causing radio signals to make interference sounds in radios around the world This proved that things could be launched into space ARPA Advanced Research Projects Agency was founded soon after as a result of Sputnik s success in space launching The united states commitment to make sure they didn t fall behind the soviets The cold war was so important that schools had duck and cover drills in case the Soviet s bombed the schools since they were so ahead in technology Joseph Licklider had a vision for connectivity Galactic Network we wanted to make sure anybody around the world could be connected to data and information Stuff 1866 1940 1957 1959 1962 32 NMIX 2020 2 30 3 20 Pr Shamp 1964 33 Paul Rand What is going to happen after we re attacked by the Soviets They began trying to prepare for this by doing the RAND project Communication network was established with the idea that we needed to send off our bomb if we were attacked All computers were connected through the BOC big ole computer it acted as a centralized computer network This hierarchy system was not protected from bombings that would affect the entire computer system if the BOC was demolished A decentralized computer network was created as a result that had built in redundancies so that connectivity could be accomplished through more than just one main point The only issue with this network there is no ability for centralized control so there is much controversy over who owns the internet Packet switching was implemented during this time ARPANET connected 4 universities together in order to test how information was sent UCLA Sanford UC Santa Barbara University of Utah This was asynchronous communication a message would wait until you were available to read it For 2 years 75 of the traffic on ARPANET was emails From 1971 to 1973 ARPANET went from 23 to 3M packets per day TCP Transmission Control Protocol This allowed all computers to understand the same language TCP IP is the system that the internet uses in order to identify a place These IP numbers were given domain names so that we could easily reach a website without memorizing IP adresses From 1983 to 1990 the internet really developed into a communication that was available to society in a more user friendly way 33 out Email 1969 1972 1974 1978 Over time NMIX 2020 2 30 3 20 Pr Shamp 34 In Switzerland a particle accelerator project was in development which included 6 500 people on the project Tim Berners Lee Communication proved to be difficult because everyone involved in the project could not receive the most updated information other than through email He worked on trying to solve the project s problem of updating their contributors without using email contantly So that everyone could see information immediately he came up with the WWW and hyptertext that allowed people to visually see information that was made up of code text Marc Andreessen wrote a program called Mosiac that allowed for multimedia to be displayed through the WWW instead of just text Companies tried to buy the software off him but he did not own the rights sinse he created the program through his workplace at the University of Illinois He gave the ideas away to the public instead so that U of I did not profit off of it TLD Top Level Domain were developed edu gov com etc Jim Clark found Andressen and they built Netscape together the first browser NSF Dropped the acceptable use which allowed only military and government groups to use the internet commercially Because of this the web grew at 341 634 rate with commercial businesses buying domain names on different servers Netscape went public on the stock market IPO Stock went from 14 to 74 within the same day of its release on the market Real Audio came out during the time Jeff Bezos developed Amazon where things could be sold online Bill Gates and Microsoft released Internet Explorer within the computer they sold as a This angered Netscape which was the sole internet browser of the time 1990 1993 1994 1995 1996 1998 The first that facts about Monica Lewinsky scandal were released on this website and showed the potential of online news bundle system Drudge Report 34 NMIX 2020 2 30 3 20 Pr Shamp How information is sent via the internet Packet switching Documents and other information pages are broken down into packets which are reassembled using IP TCP protocol after reaching its destination through the most efficient route this was developed Domain Names IP addresses Domain names are character code names which are connected to a unique IP address If you were to type in an IP address that looks like this it would take you to a website like CNN for example the topic you will need to cover The group gets a topic Each person finds an article resource on that topic and shares it with their group Each person will read 1 other article not 2 like originally planned The group will meet to talk about the topic everybody The group along with Shamp will decide what needs to be covered Shamp does a lecture presentation over the material The group gives Shamp a test question Resource Team Meet One week before your group meets with Shamp to present the material titled LAB on the syllabus each group must submit one article that they have chosen This must include the title source and link of the article First name last name and gmail address Only one scout from the combined group 2 groups per topic ex 5 6 7 8 will turn in a
