NMIX 2020 2 30 3 20 Pr Shamp 52 On 9 26 Next Friday one person from each group with have 15 seconds to give a September 17th Reminders description of your project Include the following information The cause problem optional statistic of the problem How your technology will address the problem Ex More than XX of elderly people fall down stairs which lead to hip injuries We have developed a technology that will help elderly people see better while walking up or down stairs in order to prevent falling accidents Update on Elder Ventures Project Goals This project is not a destination it s a journey Learning is the goal not the project or winning Remember that your focus should be on Use of Technology to make aging better easier or fun To change the behavior of elderly people not just their knowledge Try to think small for this project It s better to explain one thing really well instead of trying to do 5 different ideas Focus in on just one main concept so that it doesn t take forever to explain and is REMEMBER these are products that will be going to the elderly don t make them easy to understand too complicated Building Consensus The hardest part of working with these large groups is coming up with consensus which includes compromise Try to implement some strategies so that everyone has a chance to speak up instead of being drowned out by one or two people Ex Roll Call go through every single person and see what everyone has to say about new ideas or how they re feeling about the idea in place Ex Have an anonymous vote evaluation of each idea Think of your presentation as an argument Start thinking about what you want out of this presentation it should be the classes money investments Now devise an argument that will convince people to want to invest this point of view it s like selling a product Maybe get a survey of how other people like the idea product Be thorough are trying to fix You need to research all the aspects of your technology as well as the issue you Include details that show the class you have really thought this product through 52 NMIX 2020 2 30 3 20 Pr Shamp Your role Everyone has something to contribute Each group has people from different majors so think about what ever person is good at what are your strengths Then assign those people to areas that fit their strengths like Advertising Marketing Computer Science Bussiness Focus in Presentation All s Fair in Presentation Make sure you focus on the necessities of your project first the information that he requires us to have then seek ways to make it entertaining Use whatever strategies styles and technology for your presentation Do not require your group to spend more than 10 each History Location In the past we used landmarks to navigate on land However landmarks didn t work very well on sea because there was only water Latitude and Longitude Latitude is horizontally certain parts of the year Longitude is vertically This is fairly easy to calculate because it s based on the height of the sun during This is slightly trickier because the earth is spinning at all times The problem with laying a grid on the world is that it is not flat Prime Meridian Determining Longitude The first thing we had to do in order to map out the world and the seas was establish where the 0 degree longitude lay on the earth vertically then determine where you were based on longitude The chose the Prime Meridian for the 0 degree line more specifically Greenwich John Harrison came up with the first clock that allowed sailors to determine how far away they were from Greenwich in other words where they were at sea Clocks were set when it reached noon at both Greenwich and on the ship sailing when the sun was at its highest point they set the clock to 12pm 53 53 NMIX 2020 2 30 3 20 Pr Shamp 54 The idea behind this clock with two faces one for Greenwich and one for the ship was to compare the timing difference which would give us a degree in longitude difference 1 hour 15 degrees longitude For example If I m on a ship and it reaches noon I would set the ship clock to noon and compare it to the Greenwich clock which was set earlier at greenwich If the clock read 3 o clock in greenwich then I know I am 3 hours away from greenwich which equals 45 degrees away from the prime meridian GPS Global Positioning System When Sputnik was launched into space successfully an idea formed that we could use these satellites to our advantage Friendly Fire Positioning Signal Difference Trilateration During Veitnam the US Air force had problems determining where their soldiers were in comparison to the enemy because it was very mixed as in they were close to one another instead of having obvious stations of either side As a result in 1978 we sent up a bunch of satellites to create some type of gps to help our government track the military and prevent further friendly fire The satellites were launched so that they constantly floated over the same place on earth and so that there were always at least 4 satellites in sight People think that your device connects with a satellite and it communicates with it But in actuality the satellite never really knows where we are This technique determined location based on distance Ex 3 satellites determine that someone is 625 miles from Boise 690 miles away from minneapolis and 615 from Tucson It is easy to pinpoint the location because the 3 circles that formed based on the mile radius given from each satellite overlap at only 1 specific point Distance from Satellites Why is this important How does it work When our device wants to determine our location it listens for numbers pseudo random code that are sent out from the 3 satellites closes to us Distance is calculated by how quickly a satellite s information comes in 54 NMIX 2020 2 30 3 20 Pr Shamp Public Access Inexpensive E911 New Services FourSquare Shopkick There is no communication from receiver It is low power not sophisticated and it just listens There is an open signal so that anybody can determine location This system sets up automatic location finder for 911 calls All cell phones will be required to have it But carriers are hesitant to open it up It s turned GPS location into social gaming and advertising Uses receivers that measure audio signal in a store to tell you where you are in that store BLE Bluetooth Low Energy This gets around the issue of not being able to use GPS within buildings Bluetooth is a radio signal between your device and another receiver It s
